INTENSE COMPETITION FOR VEGETABLES

(p.A.) AUCKLAND, August 17. Conditions described as unsatisfactory existed at the city markets today when business was conducted under the new ceiling prices for certain vegetables. With intense competition for lower-priced produce, merchants found it impossible to allocate the goods fairly and much extra labour was entailed in selling by weight instead of by bag. One effect was to bring to the market many small buyers who previously were unable to pay the dearer prices, and the result was much clamouring for goods even at higher prices.
