BASKETBALL

SOUTHLAND DEFEATS OTAGO Basketball games between Southland and Otago are usually productive of an exceptionally high standard of play. Further evidence of this was afforded on Saturday, when the Southland representative team defeated Otago in a fast, even game by 18 goals to 15. A second grade representative match was played, but this was not so interesting, Otago being superior in most departments of the game. . In the senior game Otago scored twice after a few minutes of play with some brilliant passing. The youngest member of the Southland team, Gwenda Maley, with her accurate long shots and her clever positional play, showed that her inclusion in the team was amply justified. Of the Otago forwards Joyce Clayton played well. For a time Southland made the mistake of trying to play over Jessie McLean in Otago’s defence. Her height made her difficult to get past and helped her shooting considerably. Betty Ingram, captain of the Southland team, was the mainstay of the forwards and showed up consistently throughout. The evenness of the game was indicated by the half-time score of 8-8. The combination of both teams improved greatly in the second half, and the. scores mounted steadily, first one team gaining the advantage and the other equalizing. Moira McGrath did most of Southland’s scoring and Jessie McGrath most of Otago's. Miss Maley’s long shooting was a treat to watch. The scores half-way through the second half were 12-12. Southland played brilliantly in the last ten minutes. The centres played well and Winsome Sadlier was outstanding in the passing rushes. With two minutes to go and the scores 17-14 in Southland’s favour, the game became even faster. Each team exerted itself and scored one goal each. The game ended with the scores 18-15 in Southland’s favour. The teams were: —

SOUTHLAND.—Defence, B. Ingram (captain), L. Barrett, R. Shepherd; centres, V. Fraser, A. Pittaway (vice-captain), D. Baird; forwards, W. Sadlier, G. Maley, M. McGrath. OTAGO.—Defence. W. Dunn, V. Ingram, J. McLean; centres, B. Neill, Q. Phelan (vicecaptain), M. Stewart; forwards, J. Clayton. I. Purdue, J. Roydhouse. The referee was Miss Basstian. SECOND GRADE MATCH Perhaps because Southland had not played as a team before Its standard of play was not high in the second grade representative match. The half-time scores were 7-5 in Otago's favour, but in the second half Otago was much superior and the final scores were 19-10 in its favour. Eleanor McKinnel, in defence, and Marie Mabson, centre, played well for Southland. For Otago L. Johnson was the best Otago defence and Gladys Frye played good basketball in the forward line. The teams were:—

OTAGO.—Defence, D. Fraser, L. Johnson, M. Spence; centres, D. Reid, M. Reid, E. Watt; forwards, I. Connor, G. Frye, M. Roy. _ SOUTHLAND.—Defence, H. McKay, R. Johnstone, E. McKinnel; centres, E. Withington, M. McNeil, M. Mabson; forwards, W. McDonald, D. Robertson, G. James. The referee was Miss M. Shand. The Otago team returned to DCnedin by last evening's express.
