Miss Paddy Hodge, Gladstone Terrace, will leave on Thursday to take up V.A. work at Hanmer. Mrs L. J. Thomas, Louisa street, who has been visiting Christchurch, will return todaMrs W. F. Sturman, Earnslaw street, will return tonight front a visit to the North Island. , Miss Mary Hamilton, “Riverside,” Winton, has returned from a short visit to Cnri Mr and Mrs W. Mr and Mrs Niel Macdonald, Collingwood street, are visiting Blenheim and are. the guests of their daughter, Mrs A. C. Millar. Miss Shirley Bryant, only daughter of Mr and Mrs L. W. Bryant, Riverton, has joinea the nursing staff of the Riverton Hospital. Cadets of the Air Training Corps and members of the Tiniaru Boys’ High Scno football team will be guests at the Southland Swimming Centre’s dance to be neiu tonight. x „ Mrs W. R. Mayhew, Rugby street, Honorary secretary of the Voluntary Aid Detachment, and Mrs E. J. Mills, Nelson street, lady superintendent, will leave tomorrow to attend Voluntary Aid and Red Cross meetings in Wellington and Christchurch. Mr and Mrs T. W. Brandford were the guests of honour at -a picture party and supper arranged by the committees of the Red Cross and patriotic societies of Winton. Speaking on behalf of the former body, Mrs N. G. Pigou, referred to the sterling qualities of the departing guests, and extended the best wishes of their fellow workers. Other bodies represented were the R.S.A., the Winton Tennis Club, the Winton Golf Club and the Patriotic Association. ENGAGEMENT The engagement is announced of Jean Louisa, third daughter of Mr and Mrs J. W. Ronald, Thornbury, to Corporal Ernest Wilson, recently returned from the Middle East, son of Mr and Mrs A. Wilson, Westport. The wedding will take place next month and the future home will be in Christchurch. »
RED CROSS NEWS
Next of kin of prisoners of war are reminded of the meeting in the YJM.C.A. room this afternoon at 1.45, when Lieuten-ant-Colonel A. A. Tennent will speak on prison camp life in Italy. A meeting of delegates of the Southland Centre will be held on Saturday, August 29, in St. John’s Hall, Tay street, at 11 a.m. Next week the members of the East Invercargill committee will be in charge of the depot. Members of the Waikiwi committee will visit the hospital to help with the sewing. Georgetown Committee—Members will meet for sewing on Wednesday at 2.30 p.m. in the Presbyterian Hall, Centre street. The committee acknowledges a donation of £2/6/- from John Cawood, Alan Ayto and Bobby Ooughton, the result of a bottle drive. Central Committee —The members will meet for sewing on Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the residence of Mrs Griffiths, Leet street. North Invercargill—The members will meet for sewing on Tuesday at 2.30 the Anglican Church Hall, King street. The qommittee members are asked to meet the same day at 2.15 p.m. South Invercargill—The members will meet for sewing on Wednesday at the home of Mrs H. E. Rout, Janet street. A committee meeting will follow. PATRIOTIC NOTES The monthly meeting of the Invercargill Women’s Metropolitan Patriotic Committee was held in the depot on Thursday. A welcome was extended to the Mayoress, Mrs A. Wachner, who was appointed chairman of the committee.. Different phases of the work were dealt with. Woollen comforts are now distributed to the soldier along with his issue of clothing to ensure that each man receives these knitted goods as he enters the Army. The response to the request for cakes and biscuits for Christmas parcels, the packing of which will soon begin, continues to be good. The sub-committees continue with the sale of Victory art union tickets and have undertaken to assist in the collection of patriotic funds by the “comfort coupons.” Woollen goods have been received during the past week from Tuatapere, Waimahaka, North Invercargill, Woodend, Dacre School, Toi Toi W.D.F.U., South B, Greenhills, Central, South A, Morton Mains, Kennington, Georgetown, Mossburn, Fortrose, South Invercargill W.D.F.U., Edendale, East Invercargill and Waikiwi. SUB-COMMITTEE NOTES Hawthorndale. —The monthly collection amounted to £5/5/-. Avenal-'Northend. —The committee wishes to thank all those who contributed to the monthly collection, which amounted to £4O 6/3. Camouflage nets are being made at present. Gladstone. —A meeting will be held on Tuesday morning at 10.30 at the residence of Mrs L. C. Smith, Duke street. The work of making small camouflage nets has begun. East Invercargill.—The committee has begun the selling of comfort coupons and a special effort is being made to call at every house in the district. Georgetown.—The monthly house-to-house collection totalled £44/5/9. South B.—The committee thanks "Anonymous” for £2. Central.—The members of this committee are busy with the monthly collection and special appeal for which they hope there will be a good response. Any one willing to knit comforts should ring No. 2126. South A.—Every house in this area will be visited by collectors during next week when comforts coupons will be filled in and receipts left for donations received. WOMEN’S AUXILIARY The physical fitness classes will be held in St. John’s Hall, Tay street, on Wednesday from 5.45 to 6.56 p.m. and 6.45 to 7.45 p.m. A meeting of canteen supervisors will be held on Tuesday- at 7 p.m. in the E.P.S. office, Kelvin street. Area No. 9 will be on duty at the field kitchen today. Area No. 13 will be on duty at the waste paper depot on Friday, August 21. Transport and Plunket Aid.—Miss G. Basstian will be on duty on Friday from 12.30 to 1.30 p.m. and Mrs Roy Anderson from 1.30 to 2.30 p.m.
