BUILDING REGULATIONS.—A modification of the method of administration of the building construction regulations has been made by the Building Controller (Mr G. W. Albertson). In future all applications for permits for building are to be referred to the nearest district building controller. Until the defence building programme is completed permits will be approved only subject to the proposed works being of a reasonably essential nature. COMFORTS . FOR PRISONERS.—“One Hundred Crowded Years,” the graphic story of New Zealand during its first century, will be screened at Winton on Monday in aid of funds to supply comforts to prisoners of war.

NATIONAL SAVlNGS.—lnvestments at Invercargill yesterday totalled £lBO, making £691 for this week against the weekly quota of £2043. This leaves £1352 required by noon today to ensure the flying of the “V" flag on the Chief Post Office for the thirty-ninth successive week. SOLDIERS HONOURED AT OREPUKI.— A large attendance of friends and relations was present in the Orepuki Hall last evening when Naval Teleghaphist Eric Sorensen, who is home after two and a-half years’ service, Private Owen Kelly, who has been invalided home, and Private L. Latta, who is on leave, were honoured. Visiting soldiers were also present. Mr G. Weir spoke on behalf of the citizens and in the absence of Mr E. D. Bone, president of the Patriotic Committee, made a presentation to the guests. Constable S. Skipworth spoke oh behalf of the Returned Services’ Association.

SOCIAL AT OTAUTAU.—Telegraphist G. A. Liddell was tendered a social in the Otautau Town Hall. The guest, accompanied by Gunner W. McWhirter and Private T. McNeill, was piped on to the stage by Piper Taylor and all were welcomed by the chairman, Mr W. J. Wesney. Dr Reekie spoke on behalf of the citizens and Mr T. J. O’Neill for the R.S.A. Mr D. C. McCrostie, deputy-chairman of the Town Board, made the usual monetary presentation to the guest and Mrs H. Hogg asked him to accept a small gift from the W.D.F.U. The visitors were the recipients of cigarettes.
