RADIO APPEAL TONIGHT
PATRIOTIC EFFORT THROUGHOUT N.Z.
The Dominion-wide patriotic radio appeal which will be held tonight will bring to a virtual conclusion the intensive campaign of the last two weeks to raise the funds necessary to finance the greatly increased patriotic efforts for the current financial year, which ends next month. Many more troops in camp in New Zealand and the growing total of prisoners of war and sick and wounded soldiers have caused the calls on patriotic funds to increase tremendously and districts quotas have risen to record levels. In Southland the quota to be forwarded to the National Patriotic Fund Board has been raised to £61,000, and it is hoped that this objective will be reached by contributions made during the special campaign, by donations to the radio appeal tonight and by the proceeds of the Victory Art Union.
A feature of the recent campaign has been the explanation by representatives of the expending agents about the source of the funds they spend for the benefit of the soldiers. It has . been difficult to secure general public recognition, of the‘fact that all funds spent on comforts for the troops are supplied from the patriotic fund, but the explanation of this fact by representatives of the various organizations should do much to clear up the matter. .Southland will be expected to play its part in the radio appeal tonight, and special arrangements have been made for telephone services so that any person in the province in touch with, a telephone may make his contribution to the appeal. There will be a competitive element in the appeal between districts, zones and provinces, and it is expected that the amount raised will be a record.
Frequent progress announcements of the contributions to the appeal will be made from Station 4YZ. The following representatives of the expending agents of the patriotic funds have been invited to attend at the studio this evening to thank the public for its contributions: The Rev. Father J. Murphy (Catholic services), Mrs F. G. Hall-Jones (Red Cross Society and Order of St. John), the Ven. Archdeacon J. A. Lush (Church Army), Major Martin Brown (Salvation Army) and Mr Dudley Wills (Y.M.C.A.). .
