Mr W. M. C. Denham, M.P., will leave for Wellington on Sunday night to attend a sitting of Parliament. Mr S. R. Lowden, Invercargill manager of John Chambers and Son, Ltd., left by the afternoon train yesterday on a business visit to Auckland.
Mr A. S. Bird, formerly inspector of police at Invercargill, is at present visiting the city on holiday. Mr J. W. Woodcock, of Dunedin, fields superintendent for Otago and Southland of the Department of Agriculture, visited Invercargill yesterday. He will return north today.
Commissioner J. Evan Smith and Mrs Smith, leaders of the Salvation Army in New Zealand, will visit Gore on Thursday, September 3.
Mr E. A. Cameron, of Wendonside, was re-elected chairman of the Southland Council of Primary Production yesterday. The appointment of Mr G. R. Herron, of Balfour, as deputy-chair-man was confirmed.
Mr J. J. McCrostie, of Invercargfll, has been nominated as president of the Southland Agricultural and Pastoral Association and Mr S. T. Evans, of Longbush, as vice-president. Mr M. Rattray, a member of the staff of The Southland Times, who leaves for camp on Tuesday was met by members of the staff last evening. Mr G. J. Hope, night foreman, made a presentation and Messrs A. A. Craig and J. H. Read also spoke.
Mr G. A. Hayden, secretary of the National Patriotic Fund Board, will arrive in Invercargill! by the mid-day express on August 27. The same afternoon he will confer with members of the Southland Provincial Patriotic Council. Representatives of district committees, in addition to zone committees, throughout the province are invited to attqnd this meeting. In the evening a patriotic meeting will be held in the Civic Theatre. All patriotic workers in the city and province and the general public are invited to attend. Mr A. Macpherson was elected an honorary member of the Southland Justices of the Peace Association at the annual meeting yesterday in recognition of the completion of 50 years service as a Justice of the Peace. Mr W. A. Ott congratulated Mr Macpherson on the splendid service he had given in the cause of justice, and said he hoped that he would be spared for many more years. Mr Macpherson briefly replied. Mr J. M. Daly, who has resigned from the position of assistant manager of Briscoe and Company, Limited, Invercargill, in oi-der to take up business on his own account in Winton, was bidden farewell by members of the staff yesterday afternoon. On their behalf Mr R. F. Frampton, manager, made a presenataion to Mr Daly and wished him success in his new venture. Mr Daly has been in the employ of Briscoe and Company for 20 years. He was country traveller for the firm for many years and is well known throughout Southland.
