NATIONAL SAVINGS.—By yesterday afternoon a sum of £5OO had been contributed In National Savings at Invercargill. This means that a total of £1543 must be subscribed today and tomorrow if Invercargill is to reach its quota for the thirtyninth week in succession. RADIO APPEAL.—For the Dominion-wide patriotic radio appeal tomorrow night arrangements have been made for telephone bureaux which normally close at 5 pan. to be open between 7 and 9 pan. to receive donations. Other exchanges will accept donations to a later hour. APPEAL DISALLOWED.—The Otago and Southland Industrial Man-Power Committee disallowed the appeal of the manager of the Winton linen flax factory (Mr L. C. Vlcary) against the decision of the district manpower officer (Mr S. C. Bingham) to permit E. W. Sharp, a stacker at the factory, to leave that employment and take over the management of a farm property during the owner's absence in camp. MEETING OF MUSEUM BOARD.—The Mayor, Mr A. Wachner, took his seat for the first time as president of the Southland Museum Board at a meeting of the board last night. In welcoming Mr Wachner, Mr J. H. Thomas, vice-president, said that the Mayor for the time being was, according to the constitution, president of the board. Mr Thomas referred to the services given on the finance and building committees by Mr H. C. Ghnblett, a past vice-president. Mr Thomas also referred to the work and helpful advice given by Mr J. R. Martin. It was stated that 3587 people had visited the Museum during the last ten weeks. A magnifying glass that belonged to Robert Bums, the Scottish poet, was exhibited by Mr W. A. McCaw, in whose possession it had been for more than 70 years. Mr McCaw’s grandfather was a friend of the poet. TRADE UNION REPRESENTATIVE.—A meeting of delegates from trade unions was held last evening for the purpose of electing a representative on the Southland Technical College Board of Managers. Of 21 unions entitled to a vote, 18 were represented. Mr J. Weir was thanked for his six years of service on the board and Mr A. Cook, representing the railway tradesmen, was elected to the vacant seat.
