PREVIOUSLY REPORTED MISSING, NOW REPORTED NOT MISSING BUT WOUNDED O’Connor, A. F. 8., Dannevirke. SOUTHLAND CASUALTIES Mr and Mrs R. M. Strang, Lewis street, have received advice that their son, Flight-Lieutenant Robert Harold Strang, senior flight commander of the New Zealand Fighter Squadron, who was reported missing, is now officially presumed dead. Flight-Lieutenant Strang, who went overseas in March 1940, was 23 years of age. He was educated at the Waihopai school and attended the Southland Boys’ High School for three years. He was a keen sportsman and was a good boxer and swimmer. He also had success at cycle racing and golf. He was a member of the Invercargill Golf Club. Before enlisting in the Air Force Flight-Lieuten-ant Strang was employed by David Strang Ltd., coffee merchants. Leading Aircraftman J. G. Polson, who has died through illness overseas, was well known in Rugby circles in Southland and Canterbury. He attended the Southland Boys’ High School from '1926 to 1930, and later attended Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln. On leaving college he went to the West Coast, where he stayed for some time before returning to Christchurch. While at high school he played for the senior cricket eleven. He was a keen footballer and he represented Canterbury. He was also selected as a member of a South Island team and was a prominent player on the West Coast. He was a brother of SergeantPilot N. Polson, of Invercargill. Private V. M. Driscoll, reported missing, is the youngest son of Mr and Mrs M. Driscoll, of Winton. He was bom at Balclutha and educated at the Winton Convent, Winton District High School and St. Bede’s College, Christchurch. For his college he played brilliant football and later was an outstanding member of the Winton Club. As first five-eighth he represented Central District for several years. He was also a member of St. Thomas’s Tennis Club and the Winton Golf Club. At the time of his enlistment he was employed as a Government meat inspector at Hastings. , , Gunner Edward P. Savage, who has been wounded, is a son of Mrs A. S. G. Savage, of Gore. He was born in Middleburgh, Yorkshire, and came to New Zealand in 1924 with his parents. He was educated at the Convent school, Gore, and the Gore High School. He later joined the staff of Thomsons Ltd. at Gore. Gunner Savage was a playing member of the Celtic Cricket Club. He enlisted and went overseas with the sth Reinforcements. He is 25 years of age. Gunner A. J. Harvey, son of Mr and Mrs A. E. Harvey, of 242 Yarrow street, who has been reported wounded, is well known to sportsmen in Southland. He was educated at the Middle school and the Southland Technical College, after which he joined the staff of Briscoe and Co., Ltd., where he worked up till the time of his enlistment Gunner Harvey, an athlete of all-round ability, was a member of St. Paul’s Amateur Athletic Club, with which he won many trophies for field events. He was also a member of the Central Soccer Club, and he took a keen interest in carrier and racing pigeons.
