AUSTRALIANS WITHOUT RICE

(Special Australian Correspondent, N.Z.P.A.)

(Rec. 7 p.m.) SYDNEY, August 12. Supplies of rice for the Australian population have been suspended temporarily. This step has been taken be-

cause the native populations of the Pacific islands now depend upon Australian rice for their existence, and Australia has accepted the responsibility of feeding them. Australian and New Zealand services are also supplied. The consumption of rice by the natives of Fiji, the New Hebrides, New Caledonia and other Fighting French islands of the Pacific is stated to be 81b per head a week. Plans are in train to expand the Australian rice-growing industry.
