Late News AIRCRAFT-CARRIER EAGLE LOST

(Rec. 2.15 a.m.) LONDON, Aug. 12. The loss of the 22,000-ton aircraftcarrier Eagle as a result of a submarine attack in the Mediterranean is announced by the Admiralty. A large number of the crew is safe. The Admiralty states that at least one U-boat operating in the same area has been sunk. It will be recalled that planes from the Eagle and the Illustrious took part in the highly successful raid on the Italian Fleet at Taranto in December 1940. The Eagle was originally designed as a battleship for Chile in 1913, but in 1917 Britain took her over and she was finally completed as an air-craft-carrier in 1924. She carried 21 aircraft, compared with the 60 of a modern carrier, and her complement was 748,
