ALLIED PROGRESS IN SOLOMONS

ATTACK ON FLORIDA AND GUAD ALCAN AR

(United Press Association— Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 1.10 a.m.) LONDON, August 12. Throwing the whole weight of their attack against the islands of Florida and Guadalcanar, the Allied forces attacking the Japanese-occupied Solomons are still making progress. American troops are firmly established and are engaged in bitter fighting. The supporting Allied naval force is facing heavy air attacks from land-based bombers. It is pointed out that possession of Florida and , Guadalcanar would give the Allies two valuable bases. United States Marines have opened the door to an Allied offensive in the South Pacific, says a Marine headquarters statement. The Marines have been practising invasion tactics day and night as a prelude to the Solomons landing, including intensive jungle warfare and combined landing exercises. The Marines, who have been specially trained in amphibious operations, are now engaged in hand-to-hand combat with the Japanese in the Solomons.
