FISH SUPPLIES

Sir,—The following information may interest controllers of petrol supplies as well as all who are unable to obtain fresh fish. I am well known as a fish hawker during the past 25 years, especially between Riverton and Ohai. But I have now been deprived of my civil rights. A hawker’s licence has been granted to me, yet I am prohibited from retailing fish in my own town because there is a shop there. And to enable me to supply my old friends and customers in’ the country I have been granted three, only three, gallons of petrol. This will enable me. to travel only on two or three days a month. On Tuesday, July 28, I went to Otautau with only 31/- worth of fresh flounders. I was rushed for fish; within an hour I sold out;'and I was only three hours absent from Riverton. I could have sold all my fish without leaving Riverton but the law forbids me to do so. That’s the way they are trying to save petrol. Local fishermen are gradually dwindling away, and they will never be replaced. Instead of encouraging us old salts, the authorities are crippling the fishing industry. ARTHUR LEADER.
