Dr C. E. Beeby, Director of Education, will return north by the express this afternoon after a short visit to Invercargill. Staff Sergeant A. F. Gilkison returned north by the afternoon express yesterday after spending a week’s leave in Invercargill. Messrs G. E. Fisher, S. Todd and H. Agnew have been appointed members of the taxi section of the Invercargill Transport Control Committee. Mr R. Sharp, who was recently appointed an associate member of the executive of the Invercargill R.S-A. to represent the returned men of the present war, was welcomed at a meeting of the executive on Tuesday night Messrs J. W. Nicoll and H. Somerville have been re-elected directors of the Mabel Dairy Factory Company. Mr H. Ritchie has been appointed to represent the Invercargill Returned Services Association on the Invercargill Rehabilitation Committee. Rehabilitation committees are being set up in various centres throughout New Zealand for the purpose of advising the Rehabilitation Board on employment, training for civilian occupations, land settlement and other matters pertaining to the rehabilitation of returned soldiers.
Messrs M. W. Grantham (chairman), S. D. Macpherson and H. H. Gillard (members) and W. J. Mathers (secretary and Crown representative) of the Industrial Man-Power Committee, returned to Dunedin by the express yesterday afternoon after hearing appeals at a sitting in Mataura. The committee will hold a sitting at Dunedin today.
High tributes to the qualities of the Rev. C. A. Kennedy, minister of the Presbyterian Church at Mataura, who has accepted a call to Lawrence, were paid by several speakers at a farewell social to Mr and Mrs Kennedy at Mataura last night. The Rev. D. B. Martin, interim moderator, was chairman and the big congregation included members of the Presbytery of Mataura and representatives from other churches. During the evening a presentation of a fire-screen, a hanging, mirror and an envelope of notes was made to Mr and Mrs Kennedy. Cabled advice has been received by Mr A. Cowie, 11 Martin street, that her son, Leading Wireless Mechanic P. L. Cowie, of the Royal New Zealand Navy, has reached his destination.
The death has occurred in Auckland of Mr Alexander Manuel Ferguson, chairman of directors of John Burns and Co., and formerly for 30 years Consul for Belgium in Auckland. He is survived by his wife, two sons and two daughters.—P.A.
