Sporting BASHFUL LADY A FREAK
SUFFERED EYE TROUBLE LAST WEEK
Bashful Lady is described by a northern critic as a freak galloper—in the complimentary sense, of course. She suffered eye trouble last week, but it did not affect her galloping. Springfield Globe
Springfield Globe has been retired from the race track, and has been taken in hand by Mr W. T. Lowe, Hinds. Sally Lunn Sally Lunn was scratched for the Winter Cup at 10.35 on Saturday morning. There was nothing wrong with the mare, and it is reported that her trainer wished her to run, states The Timaru Herald. Lost Caste
Benevolent’s stocks dropped considerably after his feeble effort in the Enfield Steeplechase. He did not jump the early fences well, and appeared to be anxious to evade each one. He certainly seemed to have made up his mind to miss the stand double long before he reached it. Erination
Mr A. Syme, who won the Great Northern and the Grand National with Royal Limond, has collected third and second money in these races with Erination. As the veteran won a good stake at Riverton, he has proved a good purchase at £4OO.
Success L. G. Morris has trained the winner of the Grand National three times in the last six years.
In Tasmania The New Zealand-bred gelding Chancellor, by Peterwah-Black and Gold, won the President’s Purse, of one mile and a-quar-ter, in 2min 56 l-ssec, at the Tasmanian Trotting Club’s meeting on July 4. When raced in the Dominion Chancellor showed a lot of speed and won a good number of races. Authoress
In four starts over hurdles, Authoress has scored three wins and a third. She gave a smooth performance in the Trial Hurdles, carrying 11.4 in the van practically all the way, and she would have helped to infuse interest in the Grand National Hurdles if she had been entered. Fur Coat
Fur Coat streaked away at top speed as his rider was being legged up before the Avondale Handicap, and as the jockey had his feet out of his irons the horse raced for half a mile before he could be got under control. This prejudiced his chance, which must have been a good one judged cn his gallop with Botany 'on the eve of the meeting.
Won Five Foxiana has started in seven steeplechases, winning five and finishing second in the other two. Apart from one careful jump in the. Grand National he fenced brilliantly. Foxiana is owned by Mr L. H. Collinson, and trained by L. G. Morris, who won the race in 1938 and 1940 with Clarion Call. He was having his first run at Riccarton. Last year he was brought down for the Hurdle Race, but was prevented from starting. Kan Off Before
Nothing was going better than Slayer over the first round of the Grand National, and there was consternation among his confident backers when he decided to call it a day and evade the brush near the carriage paddock. His rider was aware of ills intention, but was unable to keep him on the fence. One of Slayer's legs had been causing trouble earlier in the week as a result of a cut. He appeared to be quite sound, but the leg might have been responsible for his fixed resolve not to continue. This was not, however, his first misdemeanour of the kind at Riccarton, comments The Timaru Herald. Two years ago the Valkyrian gelding dodged off in the Homeby Steeplechase. He topped this off by a second in the National and a win in the Lincoln. Auction
The Queensland sprinter Auction, who recently won the valuable Doomben Newmarket Handicap, may be sent to Melbourne to race. One of the reasons for this proposal is the heavy poundage he is called upon to carry in Brisbane. He was withdrawn from a recent event when it was found that h# would have to gallop with 11.9 up.
Melbourne Cup Meeting The Melbourne Cup meeting has been cut down from four days to two Saturdays. The trouble with the Victoria Racing Club is to retain the best races under this restriction, writes Sir Modred. The events more than likely to be retained will be the Melbourne Cup, V.R.C. Derby, Maribyrnong Plate, V.R.C. Oaks, and Cantala Stakes.

Didham, Boloyna, Forte; R. Heasley, Strip; M. Caddy, Josette, Varuna, Emdale; A. Stove, Golden Glow; M. Billington, Adina, Gay Boa. Boloyna has been suffering from a slightly poisoned leg since early last week and the affected part was heavily bandaged today. Veterinary advice was against starting him in the Winter Cup, but he appeared to be much improved on Saturday morning. There was thus some sound excuse for Ills disappointing showing, as apart from the trouble he had not been able to get through the desired final work.
