MR GANDHI ARRESTED
CONGRESS CARRIES “QUIT INDIA” RESOLUTION (United Press Association —Telegraph Copyright) (Rec. 7.30 p.m.) LONDON, August 9. The Government of India has acted swiftly to meet the threat of civil disobedience arising from the Congress Committee’s approval of Mr Gandhi’s resolution calling on , the British to withdraw from India immediately. Gandhi, Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru and Dr Manuala Azad, President of Congress and 51 other Congress leaders have been arrested. Included in the number are provnicial leaders at Poona and Allahabad and the members of Congress who voted for the resolution. The Government has prohibited the printing and publication of news about the Congress campaign or measures taken by the Government against it. ... The ban includes reports of speeches or statements by members of the public. News from official sources, from Indian news agencies and from accredited newspaper correspondents is exempted. The Government has also empowered provincial governments to supersede a local authority for such period as is necessary if the local authority has employed its funds, offices, members or servants in activities prejudicial to the defence of India, the public safety, the efficient prosecution of the war, the maintenance of public order, the maintenance of supply and services essential to the life of the community.
