TABLE TENNIS

OTAGO BEATS SOUTHLAND AT DUNEDIN

In the return table tennis match between Southland and Otago teams at Dunedin on Saturday, Otago won in three out of four sections. The Southland women again succeeded in defeating Otago, this time by the narrow margin of 21-19. Miss T. Ferns outclassed all opposition with, an excellent display. Miss M. Waddick, in her first representative match, won four of her eight games. Miss Stott and Miss Henderson also played well. The men lost by 24-16 after a good match. The Southland points came from L. Sharnian (4 games), T. Breayley (3), A. Booth (3) and D. Hamilton (2) and four of the eight doubles. F. Foster (Dunedin) was the best player of the night, going through undefeated.

The Southland junior women’s team .gave a good account of itself, winning 18 of the 40 games. The Townsend sisters won 15 of that total. This was a very creditable performance, as Otago had a strong team. Otago had its only runaway win in the junior men’s game. The score of 33-3 shows the extent of the defeat. B. Smith, H. Ferns and R. Forde each took a game from H. Callen (Otago).
