LADIES’ NIGHT AT ORPHANS’ CLUB

GUESTS ENTERTAINED WITH ENJOYABLE CONCERT

The Invercargill Orphans’ Club brought the 1940 season to a close with a ladies’ night held in the tea rooms of H. and J. Smith, Ltd., on Saturday evening. The president of the club, Bro. J. H. Reed, occupied the chair and there was a large attendance of members, ladies and ether guests, who were entertained with an enjoyable programme of songs, recitations and instrumental numbers, given mainly by members of the club. All the items were enthusiastically received, but owing to the length of the programme encores were forbidden. During the interval supper was served.

At the conclusion of the programme the president said he wished to thank the performers for the delightful concert they had given. He also wished to thank the executive, and especially the treasurer (Bro. S. H. B. Hill) and the secretary (Bro. J. Pickard) for the support they had given to him during the year; and also all who had contributed in any way to the conduct and improvement of the club.

Bro. J. N. Armour paid a tribute to work done for the club by the president. He said that Bro. Reed’s personality had contributed largely to the success of their gatherings during the year. In the course of his reply, the president took the opportunity to thank the ladies for their attendance, and he assured them that now that ladies’ night | had become an established institution of the club it would always be retained. The first and second halves of the programme were opened by the club’s orchestra, under the baton of Bro. F. Lange, which played the following numbers:—March, “For Liberty”; valse, “Emperor” (Strauss); march, “.War Correspondent” (Holmes); and selections from “The White Horse Inn” (arranged by Guy Jones). The following contributed items to the programme: Bro. J. G. Gasparich (song), Bro. J. Harvey (violin solo), Master Jack Wilkinson (song), Bro. C. J. Tocker (humorous stories), Mr K. Roy and Bro. G. A. Paterson (vocal duet), Bro. R. Cowley (trombone solo), Mr L. Adamson (song), Bro. C. G. Meiklejohn (song), Bro. N.
