The Social Round

The engagement, is announced of Olive Mary (Mollie), eldest daughter j of Mr and Mrs T. F. Crooks, 43 Earn street, and Alfred Henry, youngest son lof Mrs A. L. Trethaway, Grassmere, and the late Mr Trethaway. Miss Isobel Brown, who was a bridesmaid at the Carrick-Kingsland wedding on Saturday, returned to Dunedin by last night’s express. Mrs Brian Hewat, Russell street, will leave on Wednesday for Christchurch, where she will attend the Christ’s College sports. Miss Hilary Jones arrived from Dunedin on Friday night to spend the week-end with her parents, Mr and Mrs C. F. A. Jones, Earnslaw street. Mrs W. Grieve, Russell street, who will be a visitor to Christchurch for the Christ’s College sports this week, will leave for the north on Thursday. Lady Wilford, who has just returned to New Zealand from England, was a passenger from the North Island at the week-end on her way to Dunedin, where she will visit her sisters. Mrs F. W. Dunlop, South Hillend, and Miss Gertrude Macdonald, Dunedin, spent the week-end with their parents. Dr and Mrs J. G. Macdonald, Don street. Mrs E. V. McKeever, Pomona street, will leave tomorrow for Dunedin, to attend a meeting of the Health Camp Association. She will then .go to Christchurch to visit her daughter, Mrs H. G. Lawrence.
News has been received from abroad that Danielle Darrieux, the beautiful French film star, was caught in France
by the German invasion. There has been no further news of her. Several of her pictures have been shown in New Zealand.
Miss Violet Roche, one of the organizers of a sale of antiques at the Hotel Australia, Sydney, for the Journalists’ and Artists’ Ambulance Fund, says that she has been given four genuine autographed photographs, one of Queen Victoria, one of Lord Kitchener, one of the Duke of Edinburgh, and the last of Prince Arthur of Connaught. To those she has added an autographed photo of Pavlova. Miss Roche visited Invercargill last year representing the Australian Travel Association.
