WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MATAURA.— An interesting afternoon was spent by members of the Mataura Women’s Institute at the September meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall under the presidency of Mrs S. E. Smith. The motto was, “Let us not forget to be kind,” and the roll call, a gift for the Victoria Memorial Home (Invercargill), was well responded to. The local delegate to the Eastern Federation, Mrs Shorter, mentioned that headquarters had advised that of the conference pool money £l5OO had been donated to the Government for war purposes, and £5OO had been lent free of interest for the duration. Mrs Thompson explained the scheme dealing with the despatch of soldiers’ parcels, and stated that she had forwarded eight for the month for the institute. A donation of £l/1/- was made to the Makogai leper fund. The resignation of Mrs Smith was received with regret, and she was made the recipient of a shoulder spray with good wishes for her future happiness at Palmerston. The only nominee for the presidency, Mrs McConnell, was elected. A vote of thanks to all who had assisted in the arrangements for the birthday party celebrations was recorded. Matron Wilson, of Victoria Home, outlined the work of the home. Items were contributed by Mesdames Shorter, Watson and Hubener. Competitions resulted: Bloom, Mrs Shorter 1, Miss Dickie 2, Mrs Burns and Mrs Taylor equal 3. Something new from something old, Mrs Stalker and Mrs Shorter equal 1, Mrs Bristow 2, Mrs A. Walker 3.
