GOLF CLUB SEASON ENDS PRESENTATION OF YEAR’S TROPHIES At the official closing of the Winton Golf Club’s sixteenth season there was an excellent attendance of members and friends. A four-ball mixed foursome played during the afternoon was won by Miss I. Shand and Mr W. Geary, who received trophies presented by Messrs W. Balch and N. G. Pigou. Putting competitions were also held for trophies donated by Mr Duncan King, the winners being Miss I. Mclndoe and Mi’ F. Lindsay. Mr O. A. B. Smith, president of the club, in declaring the links officially closed for the season, extended a welcome to the visitors. A most successful playing season had been experienced and the enthusiasm of the members had heen a gratifying feature, he said. The links had probably been in more improved order than ever before and the various matches had been keenly contested. He congratulated the winners upon their successes. He presented prizes won during the season as follows: Men’s unofficial championship (senior). —L. Lindsay '(trophy donated by president); runner-up, W. F. Geary; junior championship, G. King (trophy donated by Mr W. T. Simmers); run-ner-up, R. B. Wilson; Hamilton Cup, H. Ward; Graham King Cup, G. King; ringer competition, L. Lindsay; A. E. Smith trophy, H. Ward; Mrs F. Boyle’s trophy, W. Brandford. Women’s senior championship, Miss I. Shand; runner-up, Miss June Horner; junior championship, Miss S. Norman; runner-up, Mrs M. Kean; Avon trophy (donated by Mrs J. R. Hamilton), Miss I. Shand; senior ringer competition (trophy donated by Mrs C. M. Lindsay), Miss I. Shand; junior ringer competition, Miss M. Thomson; L.G.U. competition (bronze medal), Miss M. King; A. E. Smith trophy, Mrs C. M. Lindsay; Mrs W. Brandfold’s trophy for most improved junior player, Miss Jocelyn Horner.

Mr Smith said that at the last annual meeting of the club, Dr P. Gow had resigned from the office of president, and the present function was the first opportunity which had presented itself for a full gathering of members to meet him and convey their appreciation of his services to the club. Dr Gow’s presidency for a term of fifteen years since the inception of the club must be almost unique in golf circles, and when it was considered that, first and last, he had been an enthusiast and an active player whenever time permitted, his record of service was all the more noteworthy. Dr Gow was a great sportsman, added Mr Smith, and he had enthusiastically supported practically every institution in the town. The members asked him to accept a silver entree dish as a slight token of their gratitude. In reply, Dr Gow, who was greeted with musical honours, said that the presentation came as a surprise. Needless the say, the gift was greatly appreciated and he assured the members that it would be put to full use in his home. Dr Gow concluded by thanking the president and members for their sentiments.

Mr A. E. Smith, of Invercargill, on behalf of the visitors, expressed thanks to the women of the club for their hospitality, and to the members generally for their welcome. He also took the opportunity of paying tribute to Dr Gow, whom he had known for very many years, and who was an outstanding man in Winton. Mr Smith said that it would give him pleasure to present the club with two trophies again next season.

An entry fee was attached to the closing day competition and the sum of £l/13/- was collected for the Patriotic Fund. In addition the Patriotic Fund will benefit to the extent of about £4 as the result of the women of the club agreeing that no trophies should be given for their weekly matches throughout the season, but that the money which would have been expended on trophies should be set aside towards the Patriotic Fund. The men’s final match for the season, a Stableford, played over 27 holes for Mrs F. Boyle’s trophy, resulted:—W. Brandford, 33-164-494; H. LUico, 22-254-47J; W. Geary, 36-10 J-464.

The yearly ringer competition was won by L. Lindsay, 58-3-55; G. Lindsay, 60-4-56 was second, and O. Smith, 61-5-56, was third.

The women’s matches for the season concluded with sealed hole competitions the senior division being won by Mrs C. M. Lindsay and the junior division by Mrs M. Kean.

SCHOOL PUPILS’ COPPER TRAIL The pupils of the Winton District High School conducted a copper trail, the cause being “Our London Cousins.” Patriotic songs and choruses were sung by the children, and by the close of the afternoon about 820 pennies had been collected, a total cf £3/8/4. RUGBY FOOTBALL A Rugby football match was held at Limehills, when teams representing Doherty’s Limeworks and Ward’s Limeworks took the field. A close game resulted in a win for the latter by five points to three. For Ward’s F. Kitto scored, Weir converting, and C. Hammond kicked a penalty goal for Doherty’s. A sum of £5 was raised during the afternoon for patriotic purposes.
