CASANOVA FOR SOUTHLAND

Hanlon Well Placed At Kurow GOLD ROBE’S GOOD PROGRESS Weights for the first day of the Dunedin meeting are due on Tuesday. Early Bird A. E. Ellis will ride Early Bird in the Epsom Handicap. An Improver Passing By is an improving young pacer engaged among the novices at the Kurow meeting today. Winning Rival Winning Rival promises to be in early favour for her Dunedin engagements. In Form Recent placed efforts by Dranoel and Airline point to their being early winners. A Veteran Amonos, who has been trotting well in recent starts, is now in his thirteenth year. Wcii Represented F. W. Ellis has seven of Nigger Minstrel’s stock in his team—six of the number being novices. Good Progress Gold Robe has been hitting out in good style in his work and as he appears much more robust than previously he should win good races this season. Hanlon's Chance Hanlon has always attracted attention as a sound miler and for this reason he is entitied to be one of the favourites for the highweight event at the Kurow meeting today. His recent form has been good. Gay Flight The two-year-old Gay Flight has been seen to advantage in recent sprint tasks at Riverton and good judges select her to play a big part in the decision of the 1 icLean Stakes. The Favourites Clinch, Besiege and Mintlaw are the early favourites for the Poland Cup at the Ohenemuri meeting tomorrow, while in the Flying Handicap Gaymiss, Valimeen and Te Takina are being given most consideration. Imposing A Fine In refusing permission for country clubs to race on metropolitan tracks (under the existing conditions), the executive of the Racing Conference is indirectly depriving the Government Treasury of a considerable amount of money. Money means money, comments “Sentinel.”

Tapanui Racing Club There was a good attendance of members at a meeting of the Tapanui Racing Club, Mr J. A. McDonald (president) occupying the chair. The chairman explained that the meeting was called for the purpose of making arrangements in regard to holding the annual race meeting at Wingatui, but the club’s application to race at Wingatui had been refused by the Racing Conference executive. After a general

discussion, it was decided that the annual races be held on the Tapanui course, and that stakes to the value of approximately £6OO be given.

For Wingatui The Chokebore stable will be represented by Shikari, Pleading, Winning Rival, Wild Fox and Full Pitch at the Dunedin meeting. The last-named is a well-grown two-year-old by Cricket Bat from Sailor’s Love, a sister to Fast Passage, and is evidently the most forward of the team’s juveniles.

A Good Display Combat, with L. Robinson up, was given a good schooling lesson at Wingatui on Thursday morning, and shaped well. After jumping the pony hurdle, he was sent over six of the schooling hurdles, and though he did not have much pace on, jumped them cleanly, and got away quickly on landing. He looks like making a good jumper. .

Spangled Maiden Spangled Maiden, engaged in the maiden class race at Methven, is owned by Mr J. R. McKenzie, and got by Volomite from Margaret Spangler. Spangled Maiden is a sister to Blackstone, who, in America, has established a record of Imin 59jsec for a mile. Spangled Maiden cost a big sum of money when purchased by Mr McKenzie, and even if she does not make a name for herself on the race track she should be valuable as a brood mare.

Gold Salute Bleeds A report from the Randwick tracks states that Mr Alan Cooper’s horse Gold Salute, bled while doing a recent gallop., Gold Salute, who is in J. T. Jamieson’s stable, is engaged in the principal spring handicaps. He has proved a costly investment for Mr Cooper, who is probably the only man who had such an exaggerated idea of his value.

A Promising Effort One of the most impressive efforts at Marton was the run of The Buzzer in the open sprint. The Buzzer, who is one of the Dominion’s outstanding stayers, could naturally not keep up with the early pace, but was making up his ground rapidly at the finish, and only just missed paying a dividend. It was his first race since he ran unplaced in the cup on the same track last New Year’s Day, and it is a fair indication that it may not take long for him to reach his form again.

Importations Restricted Because of the refusal of the New Zealand Government to grant the buyer an import licence, the two-year-old daughter of Van Derby and Belle Logan has been left on Mr E. Tatlow’s hands in Tasmania, says The Australian Trotting Record of September 18. On learning of the inability of the buyer to take delivery, Mr Tatlow broke the filly in, and already she has proved a sweet-going pacer. As Belle Logan has thrown so many winners, including the celebrated Logan Derby, Mr Tatlow should not be long finding a new buyer.

Big Prices The late Mr J. S. McLeod sold a good many horses to Australians at high prices, which proved unprofitable. Runnymede brought him in 5000gns but won practically nothing in Australia. Roasay at 2000gns also was good selling. Simba, who realized lOOOgns, became famous in the Commonwealth—as a ring-in. Yours Truly may yet repay the 1500gns involved in his transfer to Sydney, but at this juncture Tidal Wave, even at 1450gns as a yearling, looks most likely to prove a bargain. Certainty Beaten

When Manawai was stopped by Oasis and Clive Brook falling shortly after the start in the Winchester Trot at Geraldine, he lost about 200 yards, and many were surprised to see his driver chase the field. But it was not such a vain chase after all, as pacing very fast and evenly Manawai cut down all but Silver Grattan, who had led throughout, and he got to within four lengths of her at the winning post. Punters should look out for Manawai the next time he starts. Casanova At Mataura The Wrack stallion, Casanova, will be a newcomer to the ranks of light harness sires available to Southland breeders this season. A few years back Casanova was regarded as one of the best horses racing in his class, but as the result of several mishaps his form was not too reliable at the finish and he failed to graduate as far as he might have. Casanova was a fine type of pacer and as a descendant of the Peter the Great line there is good reason to believe that he will breed on. He is one of the first of Wrack’s sons to be used at the stud and he promises to nick well with Southland mares. Casanova’s dam, Pearlchild, produced others in Childe Pointer, Pearl Pointer, Verey Lights, Sea Pearl, Nantwich, Cornelian, First Wrack, Flying Cloud, Ciro and Vanity Fair. This is one of the best winning families in New Zealand as Pearlchild was got by Rothschild (a son of Childe Harold) from Verity (a great tap-root mare), by Vancleve from Bar, who was bred in New South Wales. The majority of members of this family have bred on as Pearl Pointer is the dam of Kempton, Return Voyage, Nicoya, White Satin, Plain Pearl; Nantwich is the dam of Renegade, Greenmantle, Gerfalcon and others. Casanova will stand at Chimes Lodge, Mataura.

Young Stock The Hons. G. R. Hunter and P. C. Webb have a stud farm near Riccarton, and from a quartet of two-year-olds they will have some promising horses in training soon. Gunga Din is a chestnut colt, a first foal by Salmagundi from Coalpit, by Cockpit from Gold Bound, the dam of Demagogue, Duo and Ilka. A big filly by Irish Lancer is from the same family, her dam, Gold Pit, being a sister to Coal Pit. Another Irish Lancer filly is from Sapient, the dam of Cocksure. The last of the quartet is a Myosotis filly. Her dam, Pakitere, though a - disappointing race mare, is a half-sister to Toxeuma, a good class miler. There is also one foal on the farm, a well-grown colt by Solicitor General from Gold Pit. This mare developed trouble in one of her legs recently and she was destroyed. The two-year-olds have been broken in on the farm, where they are being exercised regularly under the direction of Mr Hunter, and they will be well forward when they are put into regular training later in the season.

Two-Year-Olds Several two-year-olds will be in the team from Riccarton for the Dunedin Jockey Club’s meeting next month. F. A. Roberts has two fillies engaged. Salutation, a grey, by Theio from Queen Salute, is well grown, and comes from the family which prduced Te Kara and Limarch, two good stayers, while Calypso, on the small side, is a bay from Lady Burleigh, the dam of Nightbeam. C. Emerson has Blue Bouquet, a chestnut filly by Myosotis from Roya Baby. J. W. Pankhurst trains Verlagia, a chestnut filly by Vermeer from Pelagia, whose sister, La Justice, went to Australia and won the Maribyrnong Plate. This is the most forward youngster at Riccarton. T. H. Gillett’s bay colt is by Man’s Pal from Ven-

nachar, a Martian mare, dam also of Scratchmere Scar. H. and A. Cutts have Full Pitch, a brown colt by Cricket Bat from Sailor’s Love, a sister to Fast Passage. All of these young horses have shown promise in short sprints, but more will be disclosed in the next fortnight.

Royal Guy At Riversdale E. Mitchell has Royal Guy in work with the idea of racing him at Oamaru next month. The Adioo Guy gelding raced very solidly last term and he should not be troubled to pay his way again this year. Mitchell is also working Ginger Guy, a young square trotter who shaped well in the little racing she has done. Other members of the team include a maiden trotter by Guy Parrish from an O.Y.M. mare, a maiden pacer by Wellington Direct from Jean Mac and a Worthy Bond novice from the same mare as Royal Guy.

Veteran’s Death A veteran of the New Zealand turf passed away last week when Mr Alfred Ellingham, of Hawke’s Bay, died in Napier at the age of 75 years. Always a sportsman at heart Mr Ellingham rode over hurdles and across country as a lad and subsequently became known as a breeder, owner, and trainer. He will always be remembered in the Dominion as the breeder of that' great crosscountry performer Moifaa, by Natator (a great jumping sire) from Denbigh (winner of the Hawke’s Bay, Wellington, and other steeplechase events). Taken to England by Mr S. H. Gollan, of Hawke’s Bay, after winning the Great Northern Steeplechase, Moifaa won the Liverpool Grand National Steeplechase, the world’s leading cross-country classic contest, in 1904.
