OTAUTAU

EUCHRE_EVENING The winners at the euchre tournament run under the auspices of the Otautau Returned Soldiers’ Association were: Women, Mrs P. Sheridan 1, Mrs A. C. White 2; men, Mr W. Pulley 1, Mr W. Ridley 2. GARDEN CLUB Mr D. Mitchell presided over an attendance of 22 members at the monthly meeting of the Otautau Garden Club. It was decided that the amateur class for the next meeting be primrose or polyanthus. Mr Beilby, Scots Gap, gave an address on tomato culture, describing the various varieties, the methods of cultivation, manuring and diseases. Mrs W. R. Ayson also gave a demonstration on the preparation and classification of daffodils for show purposes. Both speakers were accorded a vote of thanks.

The competitions resulted as follows: Single bloom, Mrs D. Mitchell 1, Mrs N. McFadgen 2, Miss D. Harrington and Mrs W. Thomson eq. 3. Collection, Mrs W. Thomson 1, Miss K. Gould and Mrs N. McFadgen eq. 2, Miss D. Harrington and Mrs N. McFadgen eq. 3. Vegetables, Mrs A. A. Liddell 1 and 3, Miss T. Seatter 2. Amateur class, hyacinth, Miss T. Seatter.

TRAVEL TALK Miss B. Muirhead, president of the Otautau branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers Union presided over a good attendance at the travel talk, illustrated by coloured moving pictures, by Mr and Mrs J. D. Gilmore, of Invercargill. Various scenes in the United States of America, Canada, England, France, Norway, Sweden and Denmark were shown, and at the conelusion a vote of thanks was carried by acclamation.

Mrs N. James sang a song and Mrs G. P. Duff recited, Mrs H. Hogg playing the accompaniment. The proceeds, amounting to about £7, are to be devoted to the purchase of comforts for the men on the minesweepers around New Zealand and members of the forces.
