SUNDAY PICTURES DECISION
COUNCIL CONGRATULATED “The City Council is to be congratulated on the stand it adopted,” said Mr W. Crowley (chairman) at the monthly meeting of the South Invercargill branch of the New Zealand Labour Party, when referring to the assurance recently given to picture theatre employees that permits would not be granted for picture shows on Sunday nights for patriotic purposes. Another member said that to allow the screening of pictures on Sunday nights would be contrary to the. aims of the party. The public of Invercargill would do its share for a patriotic or any other worthy cause without such an innovation.
A motion condemning the suggestion of Sunday night picture shows was carried unanimously. Mr R. Rogerson, a member of the Fighter Aeroplane Fund Committee, reported on the work of the committee. He said the branch was to be congratulated on its efforts in raising nearly £5O for the 'und.
The secretary reported that the finances of the branch were in a healthy state and that the membership was growing steadily. Several applications for membership were approved. Pamphlets dealing with the present and future activities of the Labour Party and Mr Nash’s reply to his critics met with a ready sale, and the secretary was instructed to obtain a further supply for the next monthly meeting.
