GORE NEWS

PRESENTATION OF SACRED CANTATA The combined Gore and Mataura Presbyterian choir gave an outstanding rendering of the cantata, “David and Jonathan,” in the St. Andrew’s Hall, Devon street, when there was a large audience. The choir of about 30 voices showed pleasing harmony and the presentation revealed that much work had been put into the cantata. The solo parts were taken by Mrs J. Martin (soprano), Mrs J. Watson (contralto), Mr D. W. Kaye (tenor and baritone) and Mr H. H. Brown (bass). The quartette comprised Misses E. Neale and J. Byars and Messrs W. B. Johnston and J. Barton. The conductor was Mr P. Tait and Miss M. Johnston was the organist. At the end of the presentation Mr G. Henderson, in the absence of the Rev. F. B. Barton, on behalf of the audience, thanked the choir and friends who had assisted in the rendering of the cantata.

Later the choir and friends were entertained at supper, the hostesses being Mesdames F. B. Barton, W. Blackmore, J. A. S. Aitken, J. Lindsay, Burgess and Dickinson and Miss B. Macara. CRICKET CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING

The club had been up against it during last season, but he hoped that the members would keep the spirit of the game alive, said Mr J. J. Perry, when speaking to the report presented to the annual meeting of the Gore Cricket Club last night. It was a pity that the club had to move from the hostel. He hoped that the next annual meeting would see the club in a better position.

Mr Perry was chairman at the meeting and there was a good attendance of members. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr Perry; president, Mr W. D. Shelton; vice-presidents, Messrs George Currie, A. W. Thomson, E. Coventry, Dr A. E. Rogers and Dr R. S. Stewart; committee, Messrs J. Currie, M. Adair, W. G. Macara, O. B. Dey, I. M. Walker and F. J. McArthur; secretary, Mr M. O’Shea; material committee, Messrs J. Currie, Macara and O’Shea; club captain, Mr J. Currie; deputy-captain, Mr Walker; selection committee, Messrs J. Currie and O’Shea; delegates to the Eastern Southland Cricket Association, Messrs Macara and O’Shea; auditor, Mr C. L. Barron.

Opening day was fixed for October 5. A decision was made that members on active service should be made honorary members of the club. The question of shifting the headquarters of the club to Block A of the domain was discussed and the question of finance to meet the cost was considered. The members approved of the suggestion that only half the money in the special trust fund should be used to meet the expense, and it was agreed that the sum of £lO be taken from the club’s own trust fund to meet extra commitments.

Messrs Dey, O’Shea and McArthur were appointed a sub-committee to meet representatives of the Celtic Club and make arrangements for removal to Block A.
