SPRING BLOOMS ON DISPLAY

Large Number Of Entries PRAISE FOR QUALITY OF DAFFODILS

Considered to be the finest show which the Invercargill Horticultural Society has held for many years without exhibits from other centres, the spring show which was opened in the Victoria Concert Chamber yesterday afternoon is notable for the large number of entries and for the many blooms of great beauty which are on display. There are about 500 entries, the largest number the society has had for many years. Partly because of the excellent growing season and partly because of the increased enthusiasm of exhibitors, the daffodils this year are of particularly good size and high colouring. The judge of the daffodils, Monsignor M. Howard, said that the cup varieties showed very fine colouring and reflected great credit on local cultivators. The champion daffodil, C. G. Hayes’s Incomparabilis, he described as an outstanding bloom full of quality. The spring flowers on display were a credit to growers, said the judge of this section, Mr W. Stapleton. The polyanthii shown were choice blooms, being of good size and colouring. He was particularly impressed with an exhibit of Miss S. Henderson’s, in which single flowers were larger than a halfcrown. There was a good display of tulips, an unusual feature at the spring show, but the result this year of a mild winter and a good growing season. Mrs P. A. Thompson, judge of the decorative flowers, said that the exhibits were tastefully arranged and included some very fine blooms.

One of the chief attractions of the show is the exhibition on the stage of flowering shrubs and plants arranged by the Reserves Department of the City Corporation, a large part of the work being done by Mr Stapleton. With a row of narcissi on the bottom and with tiers of cyclamens, azaleas and ferns above, and double white and single pink flowering cherry trees and flowering apples trees flanking the display, it was highly praised by visitors yesterday. Mr J. Bayne has a special exhibit of cinerarias, and the Retreat Nursery has a display of narcissi. Also in this display is a full double-centre anemone, which is a comparatively rare specimen. At the opening ceremony yesterday the president of the society (Mr J. L. Lennie) welcomed visitors and thanked exhibitors for their support. Before declaring the show open on behalf of the Deputy-Mayor, the chairman of the Reserves Committee of the City Council (Mr E. J. McLauchlan) congratulated the society on the success of its efforts. The society had been functioning since 1868, he said, and was one of the strongest organizations of its kind in New Zealand. The Reserves Department was in close contact with the society, and he hoped that it would always remain so. Added interest is given to the show by the exhibition of a number of cage birds which have been lent by the members of the Invercargill Specialists’ Cage Bird Club and the Invercargill Poultry, Pigeon and Pe( Club. All proceeds will be given to the Patriotic Fund for the provision of Christmas gift parcels for members of the fighting forces overseas. The show will be open today only.
