ON THE TURF AND OFF
DORIA IS BRED TO STAY INTERESTING PEDIGREE OF FOREIGN COIN By SIR MODRED
A good but unlucky galloper, Swordstick recorded another second at the Geraldine meeting. Petersham, by Shambles (imp.) is one of the toughest and most consistent of South Island performers. On his recent running the Southlandowned Passaform appears to be attaining his best form. The Valkyrian-Mantua gelding, Valantua, is engaged to race over hurdles at Wingatui. Prince Plato, placed third at Marton, is a son of Plato (by Iliad) from Kilteel, by Kilbroney. The colt Par Avion, second at Marton, is by Ringmaster (imp.), sire of early speed. Beaulivre is credited with being the most forward w.f.a. aspirant racing in Sydney at present. High Caste is claimed to be a galloper favouring heavy tracks for his racing endeavours.
The Avondale youngster winner, Cambria, is by Cambria Park, a son of Kilbroney (imp.). A valuable shipment of thoroughbreds from England is reported to have reached the United States within the past few days. The draft includes Galatea II (winner of the Oaks), Hypnotist (a Derby winner) and other lesser lights of the turf, horses and mares.
Saxon Tor, a leading sprint winner at Marton, is a well-bred juvenile colt. He is a son of Leighon (imp., and by Roi Herode from a Flying Fox mare—a pedigree suggesting speed) from Saxony, by Hunting Song (imp.) from Saxon Saint, by Hallowmas (son of Martagon, sire of Martian) from Formless (a Multiform mare of the noted Australian maternal family of Nightmare). The Nightmare family will be represented on Southland racecourses shortly when the progeny of Cough and Thornton face the music. STAKES REDUCED Two of the principal events of the Victoria R.C.’s spring meeting have been reduced in value owing to the wartime situation. The Melbourne Cup, little more than a month away, has been reduced in value from £lO,OOO to £7500 and the Cantala Stakes (handicap, one mile) from £2500 to £2OOO. The races named are the only ones to be reduced in value at the Melbourne Cup fixture extending over four days. The best-bred horses of two important studs in France were sent to England and Ireland shortly before war was declared on Germany. However, the invaders appear to have taken possession of many French and English thoroughbreds and removed them to the Fatherland. For many years past the Germans have been covetous of the blood horses- of England, France and Italy.
Tracing back on his dam’s side to a number of stout individual performers of the distant past in New Zealand the Oamaru-trained gelding Petersham is verging on the sere and yellow, but he may be found equal to winning an important race during the new season. Foaled in 1933 the bay is a son of Shambles (imp.) from Blush, by Absurd (imp.) from Prudish, by Treadmill from Powder and Patches, by Phaethon (son of Trenton) from Burlesque. The pupil of T.- Hobbs can claim Trenton blood each way in his pedigree, as his sire, Shambles, is also of that great Musket line. His trainer holds the opinion that Petersham will prove capable of scoring over twelve furlongs or two miles. MAN’S PAL YOUNGSTER
The fact that Man’s Pal (imp.), by Manna (winner of the Two Thousand Guineas and Derby), by Phalaris, is now in Southland and available to local breeders, will direct attention to the appearance of the English horse’s progeny on racecourses, for the first time this season. Several of Man’s Pal’s two-year-olds have been displaying galloping ability on the training tracks and good reports are to hand about one of the number undergoing the educational process in Melbourne. The colt is called Watapal and is owned by Mr G. J. Barton (Dunedin) and Mr W. Balloch. The colt was passed in at’ 325 guineas at the N.Z. National Yearling Sales, but subsequently found a new owner in Mr Barton at a more substantial price. The dam of Watapal was Victory Bond (half-sister to Tommy Dodd), by Paper Money (imp.) from Kilberry, by Kilbroney from Success. The colt is closely related in maternal family to Foreign, a winner at Marton last week.
Visitors to the Dunedin J.C.’s spring meeting will probably be afforded an opportunity of seeing the crack filly two-year-old of last season iri action. Now ranking as a juvenile, Poria may play a prominent part in spring classic events. Three of her important engagements will be the Dunedin Guineas, the N.Z. Derby, and the N.Z. Oaks. She started in 10 races last season, winning three races, recording three seconds and two thirds. Trained at Riccarton by T. H. Gillett for Mr E. Hay, Doria is by Iliad (imp., and by Swynford) from Princess Doreen (bred by Mr T. H. Lowry), by Chief Ruler (imp.) from Doree, by Lucullus (imp.) from D’Oro (sister to Nigger Minstrel and Desert Gold), by All Black (imp.). Mr Hay’s filly is a first foal and is bred to stay. Another descendant of Iliad to race well for Mr Hay was that beautiful and brilliant horse Greek Shepherd. Foreign Coin, winner of the Juvenile Handicap (4fur.) at the Marton J.C., unexpectedly turned up trumps. His breeding is of interest in Southland owing to his maternal family. He is a son of Lackham (imp.), a son of Roi Herode from whom he evidently transmits speed to his descendants. The dam of this two-year-old winner, Foreign Queen, was by Mercian King (son of King Offa, imp., by Radium) from Megan, by Solfermo (imp.) from Success, by The Officer from Content, a good mare of Apremont line. Solferino and The Officer strains are well known in the home province.
