MAGISTRATE’S COURT

WEDNESDAY (Before Mr R. C. Abernethy, S.M.) The Invercargill city building inspector Mr G. D. McKechnie, proceeded against Eric Willis Frew, of Invercargill, for starting on the demolition of a house without a certificate from the city engineer authorizing the work to begin. He was also charged with beginning the work without having given the engineer notice in writing of the time it was intended to begin. Mr James Robertson appeared for the building inspector and Mr J. C. Prain for the defendant. Pleas of guilty were entered.

On the first charge the defendant was convicted and fined £2, costs 10/-, and on the second charge he was convicted and ordered to pay costs 10/-.

The fine indicated that the Court did not view with any favour the action of a private citizen or a builder going ahead with such work without the knowledge of the city engineer, said the Magistrate.

The assistant registrar of companies, Mr C. L. L. Harney (Mr H. K. Carswell) proceeded against W. and A. H. Thomson, Ltd., Riverton, for failing to make a return of the members of the company as required by the Companies Act. The defendant company, for which Mr J. A. C. MacKenzie appeared, pleaded guilty. Mr Carswell said that the assistant registrar of companies had sent three letters requesting a return showing the members of the company, but they were ignored. Mr Mackenzie said that some confusion had arisen so far as the company was concerned as to what was required of it. The matter was now bein' attended to. The defendant company was convicted and fined £l, costs £l/11/-.

TRAFFIC BREACHES For exceeding the speed limit, Allan Aorangi Fisher, of Otautau, was fined £l, costs 10/-; Alfred James Ball was fined £l, costs 10/-. For allowing a vehicle to carry a load exceeding that for which it was licensed, Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., (Mr H. K. Carswell) were fined £l/10/-, costs 10/-. Richard John Eades (Waikiwi), was charged with operating a heavy motor vehicle without a heavy traffic licence. He was convicted and fined £l, costs 12/-. For committing a similar offence Frederick Thomas Rumler (Browns) was fined 10/-, costs 12/-. For allowing cattle to wander on a main highway, Alexander Hain (Kennington) was. convicted and fined 15/-, costs 12/-. .
