CRICKET

REMOVAL TO NEW GROUNDS CELTIC CLUB’S DECISION

A decision to move from the hostel grounds to Block A Domain was made by the Celtic Cricket Club (Gore) at its annual meeting last night. The question of removal was raised by the president (Mr O. J. Howells) who said that because of the erection of the High School technical block on the hostel grounds steps had been taken to secure new grounds. The Gore Borough Council had made available Block A Domain and although it was not necessary for the club to remove immediately it was thought advisable that it should do so.

“Considerable expense will, be involved, but money will be available from a trust fund held by the Celtic and Gore Clubs,” Mr Howells , said. “There is a balance of £4O in this fund, but I would not advise that the whole amount be used.”

It was decided that the club move to Block A and. that £2O be taken from the trust fund to cover part of the cost to both clubs. Messrs Howells and D. M. Dunnet were appointed representatives of a board comprising representatives of the Celtic and Gore Cricket Clubs and the Gore Men’s Hockey Club to be set up to look after the maintenance of the new grounds. Mr Howells was chairman at the meeting and there was a good attendance.

An appeal to keep the game going was made by the president. The season was a fairly successful one, he said, although several matches had been abandoned because of rain. He complimented the Mataura .Club on its first success in the championship. The following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr P. R. Mallon; president, Mr O. J. Howells; vice-presidents, Mr W. Scobie and Drs J. M. Watters and J. E. Rogers; secretary, Mr D. M. Dunnet; treasurer, Mr P. Mallon, jun.; club cap-* tain, Mr H. Boyd; delegates to the subassociation, Messrs W. Southern and D. Agnew; auditor, Mr Howells; committee, Messrs W. Southern, E. Henderson, V. Stephens, W. Shore, R. McCartney and D. Agnew; grounds committee, Messrs A. Logan, D. Jones, V. Hornby and R. McCartney. Five new members were elected. Jt was decided to invite the Appleby Club to play at Gore on a date to be fixed. Opening day was fixed for October 5. Mr Howells offered to donate a bat to the best junior batsman in the club. '
