PRODUCTION OF PIG MEATS
INCREASE URGED IN N.Z. SUPPLIES TO ENGLAND
Mr N. McDonald, supervisor of the Otago and Southland District Pig Cotmcil, was present at Winton at the invitation of the Awarua Dairy Factory Co. Ltd. to address suppliers on the subject of “Increased Production of Pig Meats.” Mr J. F. Egerton, chairman of directors, presided. Mr McDonald mentioned that the Provincial Pig Councils were at pres T ent organizing for a 10,000 tons increase, which was urgently required by Great Britain. Britain had lost a very big percentage of her supply by reason of the Nazi occupation of the Low Countries, and, furthermore, when the war was ended, there would be very little prospect of an early renewal of these sources of supply, since the Germans were rapidly depleting stocks in those countries. New Zealand, by increasing her production, would not’only be greatly assisting the Mother Coun-
try, but also would be building up a permanent and profitable market.
Mr McDonald outlined the details of a central fattening scheme as controlled by dairy factories, a system which was in vogue in other districts further north. He also appealed to district dairy men to increase their pig production wherever possible by the keeping of sows. Mr McDonald answered a inumber of questions, and, at the conclusion, was accorded a vote of thanks on the motion of the chairman.
