“N.Z. PEOPLE AT A DISADVANTAGE”
PRODUCTION OF MUSIC IN OVERSEAS COUNTRIES (United Press Association) AUCKLAND, September 23. However great one’s musical ability may be, it is essential that one should live in a country where classical music is produced to absorb the atmosphere that may convert talent into genius. That is the opinion of Yehudi Menuhin, world-famous violinist, who is a through passenger by the Monterey from Sydney to the United States.
He said that America was fortunate because so many of the great artists of the world were seeking sanctuary there. Their influence should make a mark on the musical development of America.
The peoples of New Zealand and Australia did not lag behind America in most things, he said, but as far as music was concerned they were at a disadvantage unless they could spend some time in countries where music was produced. Yehudi Menuhin said that he and his wife had spent a delightful month’s holiday with his brother-in-law in the country and had carried away pleasant memories of Australia. He also gave, 11 concert recitals in Australia.
