A Diary of Sport ROAD CYCLING CONTESTS

A. Jones’s Success

By RELIANCE The longest race held by the Invercargill Amateur Cycling Club proved to be the wettest also. So far riders have been extremely lucky in having fine weather for races, but last week those who were brave enough to face the weather received a thorough drenching. A. Jones proved his worth in a gruelling ride. Riding off the middle mark with D. Ward, K. Baxter and J. Murdoch, he gained steadily, on the front markers, and after losing tune from the back markers over the first two laps gradually drew, away from them, finishing over 11 minutes ahead of H. Patton, the first back marker to finish. His win will probably put him back on the same mark as L. Johnson and H. Patton, and he must be considered a possibility for the Southland 56-mile championship today. D. Ward, the only one to stay with Jones over the full distance, worked equally well, and was unfortunate in being beaten in a hard sprint by half a wheel. A. Waddick and R. Duncan, the two front markers to finish, were not caught till four miles from home. Duncan, although tired, hung on to Jones and Ward to gain third place. Duncan, a proved long-distance rider, started riding late in the season and is not yet in top form. With the season practically at its close he will not have many more opportunities. Waddick tired quickly over the last bit, but had the day been fine would probably have made it harder for the middle markers. As it was he put up a very creditable performance. Patton and L. Johnson were up against a hard proposition in Ward and Jones, and although they gained slightly over two rounds, they could not sustain the effort, Johnson being dropped before the last lap. Patton finished 11 minutes behind the winner, having lost seven minutes on the original handicap.

SCRATCH RIDER C. Flowers (Dunedin) will probably be riding in the Southland championship today and most likely will have the scratch mark all to himself. With Patton, Johnson, Hubber, Jones and Ward probably on the mark next, to him he will have a hard time catching them. The championship will be the last major event held here this season and will carry a substantial prize list, which has already been published. The Otago 50-mile championship has been set down for October. 12 and as a large contingent of local riders intends .making the trip to Dunedin, a race has been arranged for the previous Saturday, October 5, to give competitors a ride of suitable length in preparation for the Otago event. This race will be twice round a block through Kennington, Woodlands, Rakauhauka, Roslyn Bush and Mill road, the distance being approximately 45 miles. The Otago centre gave a decision on the appeal forwarded by R. Blackburn. The centre stated that although the appeal was fully justified, the circumstances were such that the decision given by the referee, Mr H. Insall, which it considered correct, must stand. It was an unfortunate occurrence, but such things happen in spite of efficient organization. The local road season will close on October 19 with a race to Bluff for a trophy valued at £l/1/- donated by Mr S. Mitchell. Today’s race will start from the usual place in Tay street at 1.45 p.m.
