COMBAT’S CUP CHANCE
Taxpayer Expected To
Carry On
N.Z. CUP WEIGHTS TOMORROW
The first race at Geraldine today will start at 12 o’clock.
Dunedin Meeting Nominations for the Dunedin spring meeting, and forfeits for the McLean Stakes and Dunedin Guineas, are due on Tuesday.
Don’t Forget Don’t Forget may never make a name for himself as a stayer, but his Ashburton win may be repeated in some of the best sprint events. May Show Up
Nightdress has never been the most reliable, but there is an idea* that he will be improved by the recent racing he has had and may show up today. Irish Dawn Recent racing suggests that Irish Dawn will be in the money at Geraldine today. She beat a novice field in hollow style at the Otago Hunt meeting. New Zealand Cup Weights for the New Zealand Cup will be declared tomorrow. An acceptance of £3 will be due on October 4, one of £6 on October 25 and one of £lO on November 4. Well Related A three-year-old brother to Gold Robe (Nigger Minstrel-Desert Maiden) is to be placed into work shortly. He has been hacked about and is a good type. Royal Lancer A Christchurch report states that the reason Royal Lancer returned such an outside price when he won at Ashburton was that he was sore before the race. Toro Koura Toro Koura is expected to be improved by his race on Saturday. If anywhere near his best he would make short work of the sprinters at Geraldine with 8.9 on his back. Two Engagements Happy Man is giving away time to start in the second trot at Geraldine so evidently he is expected by his party to win his first start —the Geraldine Handicap. Failed Again The Raker did no better in the Ashburton Handicap than in his two previous races in open company, and he was not paid up for in the Geraldine Cup. A Newcomer At Invercargill J. Langford has a four-year-old sister to Pink Bond (Pink Coat-Tray Bond) in work. She was worked as a two-year-old but had to be put aside because of an injury. Penalized
Ferry Post has been penalized 12yds in the Sir Thomas Wilford Memorial Handicap at the Wellington Trotting Club’s meeting, and he will start from 60yds behind.
Wellington Stakes The Wellington Stakes for three-year-old pacers at Hutt Park on Saturday has drawn a select field and a clash between Special Force, , Gold, Chief and Walter Moore is being awaited. Shikari
It is reported from Timaru that there is a suspicion regarding Shikari being quite all right in the wind. If this is so it will seriously affect his chances in classic races this season.
Early Announcement The North Island apprentice, W. J. Mudford, who won the New Zealand Cup last year on Yours Truly, has been offered the mount on Areas in this year’s race. Taxpayer’s Next
Taxpayer was not produced at the Otago Hunt meeting because his owner was dissatisfied with the weights. Taxpayer is well placed at Geraldine today and a repetition of his Riccarton form will see him hard to beat. A Division Provision will have to be made for a division in the Geraldine Trot, in which 22 acceptors are on the limit. This will cause more than usual confusion, as there is no handy place in which to marshal a second division. Short Odds Some of the odds that are being quoted about Ferry Post at Hutt Park on Saturday border on the ridiculous. As he is engaged twice during the day and is always liable to break up at the start, complete confidence cannot be shown in him. Hurdle Prospect Land Raid may be capable of a surprise in the First Hurdle Handicap at Geraldine today. At the Waimate Hunt meeting he won over hurdles from Cintilla and Silver Slipper to the tune of an outside price. Master Dingle, who was unplaced, now meets Land Raid on 41b better terms, but if the latter has improved any he will be a distinct possibility. Royevrus .Royevrus, winner of the principal handicap at Avondale on Monday, is a five-year-old gelding by Surveyor from Desert Fire, by Diacquenod from Cross Fire by Camp Fire, a grandson of Carbine. On the first day of the meeting Royevrus was one of the outsiders in a sprint race, but on Monday he started first favourite to win.
Combat’s Chance When Combat won at the Otago Hunt meeting he gave nothing else a chance over the mile journey. In the Geraldine Cup today he has 7.8—41 b more than he carried at Wingatui—and if he is in the same galloping humour he should be hard to beat. Certainly the field is a stronger one, but at the Otago Hunt meeting .he beat Lazybones, who had raced well at Riccarton, without any trouble. Combat has yet to win over 10 furlongs but his form over a mile suggests he will see it out.
Cup Candidates Winning Rival, Glenora Boy, and Settlement, the three place-getters in the Ashburton Handicap, are engaged in the New Zealand Cup. Beau Repaire, second in the Avondale Cup, is also due
to contest the Riccarton race. He is a half-brother by Beau Pere to Royal Chief, and this pair will probably be two of the early favourites for the Cup.
Train Arrangements For the Dunedin Jockey Club’s spring meeting, which will be held on Saturday and Monday, October 12 and 14, arrangements have been made for a special train from Invercargill on the Monday and a return train the same evening to Invercargill. The morning train will more or less conform to the timetable of the usual InvercargillDunedin express and the evening train will leave Dunedin at 5.30 p.m. and Wingatui about 5.45 p.m. Horses competing at the meeting can be sent home by this train. Old Stagers
Roi I’Or, one of the trotting idols of the racing public in Canterbury a few years ago, is at present in the North Canterbury district and in a good home is being given sufficient exercise to keep him in healthy condition. Occasionally used as a shepherd’s hack, -Roi I’Or is also the children’s favourite mount when odd jobs are to be done. The old favourite looks fit and well and his legs show no sign of the hard racing he has gone through. Another public favourite in Harold Logan is still the pet of Mr E. F. C. Hinds and Miss Hinds at New Brighton, and for his age he is one of the best preserved pacers in the ; Dominion. Harold Logan won a big number of races and is the only horse to carry a garland of flowers given by an admiring public. Still another champion of bygone years in Logan Chief carries out menial duties on an Otago farm in making the daily trip of three miles for the mail. The three champions mentioned have well earned the easy life they are now enjoying, and it is a tribute to their owners, who have appreciated the good services given.
