Miss Heather Allan has returned to Temuka after spending a short holiday with Miss Joan Wilson, South Hillend. Miss J. Hetherington, inspector of secondary schools, and Miss M. J. Brown, have returned to . Wellington after spending a few days in Invercargill. Mrs R. T. Stewart will arrive from Winton today to spend a few days with her parents, Mr and Mrs C. F. A. Jones, Earnslaw street, before leaving for the north.

Mrs S. O. English, Dominion president of the League of Mothers, who has come south to visit the Dunedin and Southland branches, will arrive in Invercargill tomorrow to be the guest of Mrs J. D. Campbell, Morton street. Constable A. Cooper and Mrs Cooper, Wellington, are visiting Wyndham on holiday leave. After the performance of “Eliza Comes to Stay” at Winton last night, the members of the cast and orchestra and other helpers were entertained at supper by the executive of the patriotic committee at the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s rooms.

Mrs W. J. Currie, Wyndham, has returned from a holiday visit to Dunedin and Otago Central. The Arts and Crafts Circle of the Southland Women’s Club will hold an open afternoon and evening tomorrow. A display of Maori arts and crafts will be on view from .2.30 p.m. till 4.30 p.m. and an evening performance will begin at 7.45.

Mrs A. L. Adamson, Rosedale, has offered her home for a garden party to be held.there this afternoon. Maypole and folk dancing will be a feature of

the afternoon’s entertainment. A welcome is extended to all, and the funds will be in aid of the Sudan United Mission.

Waddel, sen., “Tainui,” Bann street, returned early in the week from a visit to Dunedin and Balclutha. Mr and Mrs L. E. Edwards, Barrow street, have returned from a short visit to Christchurch. There was a good attendance at the evening held by the Otautau Croquet Club to present the trophies won during last season. Bridge and five hundred were played, the winners of the former being Mrs J. Hall and Mr P. Mackenzie, and of the latter, Mrs Gordon. Mrs Smart congratulated the winners of last year’s competitions and presented the prizes as follows: Championship and breaks competition, Mrs E. T. Silverwood; runner-up in championship, Miss Reay Campbell; doubles, Mrs G. Sinclair and Miss Donnan; doubles (incompleted the previous season), Mrs R. Smart and Miss Donnan. THORNBURY

Mr and Mrs A. M. Fallow have returned from spending a few days with their daughter, Mrs J. McKee, WaiMr and Mrs J. Fallow have been visiting their daughter, Mrs A. Low, Bays•water. The Thornbury branch of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union held a bring-and-buy sale and baby show, which were well supported. The competition for naming the doll

was won by Mrs K. Foster and the prize for guessing the number of peas in the bottle by Mrs R. Buchan. There was a large entry for the baby show and the awards were given as follows: One to nine months, Mrs Jenkins’s baby; nine to 18 months, Mrs W. Hayward’s baby; 18 months to three years, Mrs J. McKenzie’s baby 1, and Mrs H. Hayward’s baby 2. A social function to bid farewell to Mr and Mrs H. J. Riddle, who have taken up residence in Riverton, was organized at Thornbury last week. The evening was spent in dancing and musical items, the music being supplied by Mr F. Smith. Songs were sung by Miss M. McLean, Mr R. Buchanan and Mr F. Finney. Mrs R. Cameron was the accompanist. Miss P. Anderson, of Invercargill, danced the Highland Fling and sailors’ hornpipe, being accompanied by Mr Mortimer, of Invercargill, on the pipes. Mr F. Wohlers spoke in eulogistic terms of the guests and called upon Mr Donald McFarlane to make a presentation. Mr G. Carmichael spoke on behalf of the saleyards committee, Mr R. Cameron on behalf of the dairy factory, and Mr A. F. Weir as a returned soldier appreciated the patriotic work that Mr and Mrs Riddle had done during the last war. Mr Riddle replied on behalf of his wife and. himself.

RIMU Mrs W. Stewart has returned home after visiting her daughter, Mrs R. Hancox, Invercargill, during the weekend. Mrs W. Curry has been the guest of her sister, Mrs Erskine, Papatotara, during the week. Miss L. Emerson is on holiday with her cousin, Mrs M. Barlow, Invercargill. SPAR BUSH Miss Mary - Maloney has returned home after spending a holiday with Miss Winnie Douglas, Fairfax. Mrs J. Souter and her family have returned from a holiday at Woodlands. Miss A. Suddaby was successful in the men’s section. The Territorial Sub-Association at Orepuki recently entertained Messrs M. Houlihan,’G. McLean, C. Smith and W. McKenzie, who are proceeding to camp with the next draft. A big crowd was present. During the evening the presentation of a money belt and socks was made to each recruit by the secretary of the branch, Mr F. H. Shepherd. He wished them all the best of luck and a safe return. His remarks were endorsed by Mr C. McKeown, president of the Orepuki branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association, Mr E. D. Bone, Mr R. Lee .on behalf of sporting bodies, and Mr E. J. Weir for the business people. Community singing interspersed with songs by Mrs C. H. T. Simpson and bagpipe selections by Mr D. Pearce was enjoyed. For the dance which followed, Mr R. Menpes supplied the music, and Messrs E. D. Bone and R. Lee were masters of ceremonies.
