FINE RESPONSE BY PUBLIC
CHRISTMAS PARCELS FUND NOW CLOSED
“The appeal launched for £lOO for the Christmas Parcels Fund has met with a very fine response, the whole amount being in hand, and the fund is now closed,” states a report submitted by the secretary of the Eastern Southland Patriotic Committee (Mr R. S. Green). The report states that contributions of goods would be received up till tomorrow, and for this purpose the depot in the Town Hall would be open each afternoon. Shortbread and biscuits are the principal requirements, and these are preferred packed in tins. The four Gore schools undertook last week the collection of flour, bags for packing soldiers’ parcels, and the result was most gratifying. A complete tally is not yet available, but the Gore school alone collected 800 bags, and when the High School, Convent and East Gore collections are added, the total should be a very substantial one. The work of the children was deserving of high praise, the report stated. The Waikaka Valley community sing on Saturday evening, organized by the Women’s Division of that district, was a great success. A flag collection realized £l4/9/3, and an electric iron given by the Southland Electric Power Supply was auctioned, re -offered repeatedly, and finally knocked down for £6, this bringing the total from the sale of the iron to £34/2/6.
The Knapdale bachelors’ ball resulted in £7/18/6 being paid into the parcels fund. The Charlton committee held a community sing on September 4 with a sale of produce and competitions as additional sources of revenue. The takings totalled £6O/19/9, and expenses 12/6, leaving a net profit of £6O/7/3. The Gore sub-committee which handles the sale of raffle tickets reports a shortage of ticket sellers. Young women are called for. Those willing to assist are asked to notify Mr W. F. Reynolds, c/o Dalgety and Company Ltd., or Mr L. S. Andersen, c/o the St. James Theatre.
WOMEN’S GOLF A good field took part in a sealed hole match conducted by the Gore Ladies’ Golf Club, the match being won by Mrs G. Sinclair. The best cards were: Mrs G. Sinclair, 63-18-45; Miss I. Rhodes, 62-11-51; Mrs G. C. Hamilton, 64-12-52. The draw for a medal match to be played tomorrow and on Saturday is as follows:—Miss Kirk v. Miss M. Rogers; Miss Mcßride v. Mrs H. Wilson; Mrs L. T. Cockerill v. Mrs A. D. Reid; Mrs G. C. Hamilton v. Mrs D. S. McLeod; Mrs F. Wylie v. Mrs Smart; Mrs G. R. Martin v. Miss Fox; Mrs E. J. Crosbie v. Mrs F. Olson; Mrs G. Mitchell v. Miss Thompson; Miss H. Fleming a bye. Saturday players are: Miss I. Rhodes v. Mrs J. Ross; Miss M. McLeod v. Miss D. Hoffman; Mrs Bogue v. Miss A. Thompson; Mrs R. Lusk v. Miss Durward; Miss M. Moore v. Miss Monaghan; Miss K. Kelly v. Miss E. Graham; Mrs Sinclair a bye. 1 MATCH COMMITTEE MEETS A discussion on two matters which cropped up during the playing of the second qualifying found of the Gore Golf Club’s championship, and in which two senior players were concerned, was held at a meeting of the match committee of the club. In the first case the player had pressed down with his hand a rough piece of green between the ball and the hole, and he was penalized two strokes. The second player had lifted his ball away from a ditch, on account of the stance, and it was found that he was in order, as the point was covered by local rule. The order of the play-off for the championships has not been altered. PATRIOTIC FUNDS
