SUCCESSFUL YEAR ENDS
SOUTHLAND TRAVEL • CLUB
FIRST ANNUAL MEETING There was a good attendance at the first annual meeting of the Southland Travel Club yesterday, when Mr A. W. Jones presided. The annual report, previously published, and balance-sheet, read by the hon. treasurer, Mr J. Pickard, were unanimously adopted. ‘ Mr Jones outlined the aims and objects of the club which had its first meeting on September 4, 1939. There had been 25 speakers during the past year, and they had interested the members in many countries. Great pleasure had been felt in offering hospitality to visitors, particularly to members of sister clubs. The president paid a tribute to Mrs Simmonds, who as hon. secretary had given valuable assistance, to Mrs J. Mcllwraith, who had proved a capable organizer, and to Mr J. Pickard, for his efficiency as hon. treasurer. The entertainment committee was thanked for its helpful service and the management of H. and J. Smith’s for the courteous attention shown at all functions. Mr Jones referred to the recent departure of Mr and Mrs F. J. Raines from Invercargill and of their deep interest in the club. The members had been enthusiastic and regular in attending functions, said Mr Jones. He thanked the artists whose performances had greatly assisted in the success of the club’s activities. The election of officers resulted as follows: Patron, Mr W. J. Jones (reelected); president, Mr A. W. Jones (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mrs R. C. Abernethy, Mrs W. J. Jones, Messrs T. H. Mrs Mcllwraith spoke of the work of the knitting bee, which was the Travel Club’s patriotic effort. Much knitting had been done for soldiers from Southland, but further support would be welcomed.
Pianoforte duets were played by Mrs F. Jones and Mrs A. E. H. Bath and songs were sung by Mrs F. Petrie, accompanied by Mrs Bath. Mrs J. Robertson expressed thanks to the performers.
