PATRIOTIC_CONCERT PROCEEDS TO ASSIST PRINCESS A successful concert was staged by the Lumsden Drama Group in the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s hall, Lumsden, the takings being to help the Civil Servants’ Princess Committee. The programme was as follows: Play, “Aunt Lizzie’s Relations,” Mesdames Upchurch, Henderson, Campbell, Latham, Bell, Nelson, and Miss Bell; monologue, “The Jew’s Wedding,” Mr P. Moffitt; play,
“Anti-Gas Serum,” Misses Bell and Bigger and Messrs Wildey and C. McDonald; vocal duets, “Barcarolle” and “Beautiful Ohio,” Mesdames Alison and Sims; monologue, Miss D. Macauley. The second part of the programme consisted of a musical play, “The Fuller Life” which consisted of bright dialogue interpersed with musical numbers. The costuming was colourful, the whole cast being dressed in Eastern style. The cast was: Mesdames Alison, Sims, Bell, Nelson; Misses Bell, Biggar, Macauley, and Messrs Nelson, Milburn, C. McDonald, Moffitt, Upchurch. The producer was Mr E. Wildey and Mesdames Ashby, Bell and Latham were the accompanists.
PATRIOTIC SPORTS DAY The Citizens’ Committee held a most successful sports day in the Lumsden Recreation Ground. A women’s football match between the Basketball Club and the Hockey Club was won by the Hockey team, the score being 15 to 3. The teams were: Basketball.—E. Crosbie, T. Menzies, B. Bell, M. Cavanagh, E. Earl, P. Johnson, M. Woodcock. Hockey.—A. Sherriff, E. Soper, J. McKinna, Mrs Butson, D. Earl, A. Hoffman, I. Sherriff. The referee was W. Small. ' \ A hockey match, men v. women, resulted in a win for the men, the score being 2 to 1. Mr Heath was referee. The teams were: Men: W. Small, W. Barry, F. Crosbie, A. Sherriff, A. Crawford, S. Earl, J. Bailey. Women: E.
Soper, J. McKinna, D. Earl, Mrs Butson, A. Sherriff, A. Hoffman, I. Sherriff.
The boy’s bicycle race resulted: L. Keown 1, S. Staite 2, G. Henderson 3.
Races resulted: Girls under 6: C. Reidy 1, T. Williamson 2, N. Humphries 3; girls under 10: B. Latham and S. Holland equal 1, M. Small 3; boys under 12: G. Henderson 1, L. Soper 2, S. Staite 3. A competition, guess the weight of Baby Bliss, was won by Mrs A. McDonald. HOTEL GUESTS The following have been recent guests at the Royal Mail Hotel, Lumsden: Messrs G. Craig, L. McColl, J. The Carnival Committee has decided to close on September 21, when a combined effort of both Princesses will be held in the Returned Soldiers’ Association’s Hall, at Lumsden. A coronation ceremony will be held on Friday, October 4, when the Civic Band from Invercargill will be present.
