PACKING OF GIFT PARCELS
CHRISTMAS PRESENTS FOR MEN IN FORCES
The packing of a Christmas gift parcel for a Southland soldier, sailor or airman overseas may not be a long and difficult job, but with 1380 such parcels to be packed by the end of next week, members of the women’s patriotic committees in Invercargill are having a busy time. Members of the seven city committees with quotas of 50 parcels are spending a day each packing them. They will be followed by the two city committees with quotas of 25 and then all members will start packing the country committees’ parcels. Made up with tinned fruit, a tin of cigarettes or pipe tobacco, a 21b Christmas cake, sweets or biscuits, tinned milk and a handkerchief, the parcels are valued at 10/-.
The North Invercargill committee packed its parcels last week, and yesterday the East Invercargill committee finished its. The St. John Ambulance Association’s hall in Esk street is being used for the purpose. Many of the country committees have sent the money to buy the goods, while others have sent the goods except the tobacco, chocolate and cakes, which are being bought in bulk.
