PERSONAL
The Minister of Education, the Hon. H. G. R. Mason, and Mrs Mason will arrive in Invercargill on Thursday evening. On Friday morning Mr Mason will visit city schools and shortly after midday he will leave for Gore where he will open the" new technical block of the Gore High School. Major C. E. Lees is at present visiting Invercargill in the course of his military duties. He will leave again for the north on September 30. Mr A. V. Poole was a passenger by yesterday afternoon’s express fox- Dunedin. He will return by the express this evening.
Captains T. H. H. Ham, C. J. Pomeroy and A. R. U. Smart are visiting Invercargill in the course of their military duties. They will leave for the north again on September 30. The Rev. Father T. Fahey, of Dunedin, who visited Invercargill during the week-end, returned north yesterday.
Mr J. W. Hinchey, who has been appointed secretary of the Southland ManPower Committee, has returned from leave to take up his new duties. Mr A. Curson, who is leaving soon for military camp, was bidden farewell by members of the St. John Ambulance Brigade at the fortnightly parade last night. The superintendent, Mi’ B. Cutforth, in making a presentation, wished Mr Curson good luck and a safe return. His remarks were endorsed by Mr R. Eunson, who wished the guest a successful career on active service. Mr Curson replied.
Mr R. B. Bannerman, of Gore, was congratulated on his enlistment in the Air Force by the Southland Wax - Funds Association at the bi-monthly meeting. The chairman, Mr H. J. Farrant, referred to the fact that Mr Bannerman had also served in the last war and it was decided to v send a letter of congratulation to him on his ability and willingness to undertake service duties again. The committee extended to him its wishes* for his future welfare. Mr E. D. Dyer, coach during the season of the Old Boys’ Rugby football third fifteen, was the guest of honour of members of the team at a function which was held at the Old Boys’ dance on Saturday night. Mr B. Clark, in making a presentation of a log box on behalf of the members, expressed the team’s appreciation of the services given by Mr Dyer during the season. The team was runner-up in the third grade competition.
Messrs R. C. McKenzie and G. F. Horrell were returned unopposed as directors of the Tuatapere Dairy Factory Company Ltd., at the annual general meeting of shareholders. Mr H. D. Norman was reappointed chairman at a subsequent meeting of directors. The Rev. R. Thornley, accompanied by his wife and infant son, has returned to Auckland after an absence of two years and a-half in England. During that period Mr Thornley worked for the Methodist Church in the East End of London and in Lancashire. Mi’ P. W. Rule, of Timaru, was presented with the gold medal of the New Zealand Institute of Architects by the chairman of the Canterbury branch, Mr G. A. J. Hart, at a luncheon held recently. Mr Hart said that the medal was intended for presentation to the person or firm producing the best public building of the year, and in this case >t was awarded for the new surgical block at the Timaru Public Hospital. It was the second time that the medal had been won by a Timaru architect. In reply, Mr Rule paid a tribute to all those who had assisted him in the work.
