SIR FREDERICK’S HURDLES
DON’T FORGET BACKED AS CERTAINTY EXCELLENT RACING AT ASHBURTON (Special to The Times) f CHRISTCHURCH, September 14. Jewish Lad, favourite for the CountyHurdles, went to the front at the first fence and with half the journey covered he had opened up a big break but he hit a fence near the five-furlong post. Sir Frederick then gradually drew to -the front and went on for a comfortable win from Leopardstown who lasted to hold off a late run by Master Dingle. ROYAL LANCER AN OUTSIDER Pleading was sent out a pronounced favourite for the Novice Stakes but although filling second place he had no chance with Royal Lancer. The latter went to the front two furlongs from home, and led into the straight from Pleading, Jolly Time, Pink Gauntlet, Whiphand and Sweet Mystery. Pleading threw out a strong challenge but Royal Lancer was never in danger. Jolly Time was a fair third, beating Sweet Mystery by a head, with Wild Coon and Safe Light close up. WAINONI JACK IMPRESSIVE The Selma Trot was responsible for an impressive performance by Wainoni Jack, who was well back until the last two furlongs. Happy Man broke up shortly after the start and lost a lot of ground but with five furlongs to go he had rushed to the front and had a substantial lead entering the straight from Salisbury, Hamar Fast, Festivity and Wainoni Jack. Happy Man appeared to be .in for a decisive win until Wainoni Jack put in his claim a few chains from the post and the latter wore him down to beat him in the last 1 stride. WINNING RIVAL’S GOOD WIN All of the acceptors paraded for the Ashburton Handicap. A most interesting race was staged and the favourite Winning Rival, justified her position by an impressive win. With a mile covered Entail had taken charge and led round the home turn I and into the straight from Winning Rival, Sovereign Lady and Glenora Boy with Settlement moving up from a rear position. Entail surrendered to Winning Rival a furlong from home and Sovereign Lady and Glenora Boy and later Settlement challenged Winning Rival who under the whip for most of the run home hung on to gain a half-length verdict from Glenora Boy who beat Settlement by a head with a similar margin to Sovereign Lady. Petersham, Entail and The Wrecker followed with The Raker always well in the rear. DON’T FORGET WINS EASILY Don’t Forget, supported down to a little better than even money in the
Chatmos Hack Handicap, had a decisive win. He and Retrogression made play to the home turn from The Vulture and Night Glass but when Retro- ! gression retired at the straight enI trance Don’t Forget streaked to the front and had the issue settled from that stage. The Vulture, Night Glass and Airline followed him into the home run and of these Night Glass finished best and got to within a length of the favourite who, however, was being eased up at the post. Airline was a fair third, two lengths in front of Dinah Dhu with The Vulture, Lord Midas and King’s Toast close up.
SPECTACULAR FINISH I The Penscroft Hack Handicap was won by Prudent Prince who in spite of his win at the Grand National meeting was only in moderate demand. Ferriby went to the front shortly after the start and led into the straight from Dranoel, Muffler, Prudent Prince, Great Night and Iceland Spar. All these closed on the leader a furlong from home. The first to wear him down was Dranoel, who was soon challenged by Prudent Prince with Iceland Spar putting in a claim. A spectacular tussle ensued, Prudent Prince getting up in the last stride to beat Dranoel. Ferriby hung on for a close third, beating Iceland Spar by a neck with Blue Abbey leading the remainder. ROY BUN’S WINNING RUN Much interest was evinced in the Spring Handicap for which the best field seen out at Ashburton for a long time was paraded. Shikari was made first choice, but after being prominent to the straight entrance he faded out and was one of the last to finish. At the end of a furlong Toro Koura and Rebel Star showed out from Night Dress, Shikari and Royal Chief. Rebel Star led into the straight from Toro Koura, Night Dress, Night Hawk, Royal Chief and Roy Bun. Rebel Star was challenged half a furlong from the post by Night Hawk and then Roy Bun appeared with a telling run which landed him an easy winner from Night Hawk who headed Rebel Star in the last stride. Royal Chief was two lengths away in front of, Night Dress, with Passaform, Rebellion, Toro Koura, Willie Win and Shikari following in that order.
BRAW LASS ALL THE WAY Braw Lass went to the front early in the Rakaia Trot and led throughout. She led into the straight from Bui-t
Scott, Swft Lady, Clive Brook, Mortlake and Wainoni Jack. Burt Scott made a game attempt to bridge the gap but Braw Lass was not seriously troubled. Clive Brook was a fair third, a length in front of the fast-finishing Panquitch.
