AMERICAN AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIP

(Received September 13, 7.0 p.m.) NEW YORK, September 12.

In the quarter-finals of the American amateur golf championship, Ray Billows eliminated the defending champion, Marvin Ward, 4 and 3. McCullough defeated Fischer, 5 and 4. Other survivors are R. Chapman and 'Wehrle.

DRAW FOR STABLEFORD MATCH AT WINTON

The draw for the men’s Stableford match to be played on the Winton golf links today, for a trophy presented by Mrs F. Boyle, is as follows:—C. Strang v. P. Boylan, W. Brandford v. N. G. Pigou, F. Rawle v. L. Lindsay, O. Smith v. G. King, R. Wilson v. R. Goodall, A. Dale v. J. de la Perrelle, W. Geary v. H. Lilico, H. Denny v. G. Lindsay, H. Ward v. R. King, J. Shaw v. L. Harbour, T. Hobbs v. W. Simmers. The last round of the match for the A. E. Smith Trophy resulted:—G. Lindsay, 76-10-66; H. Lilico 91-24-67. F. Rawle 79-11-68. The result of the A. E. Smith Trophy, which was presented for the lowest net aggregate score for the best four medal rounds out of six, was as follows: —H. Ward 71-69-76-72 228; W. Geary 76-69-72-76 293; G. Lindsay 78-77-73-66 294; G. King 75-78-71-73 297.

The following handicap reductions are announced: G. Lindsay, 10 to 8; H. Lilico, 24 to 22.

INVERCARGILL LADIES’ CLUB The following were the best scores in the September bogey match played at Otatara on Thursday:—Miss N. Gilkison, 4 down; Miss C. Smith, 5 down;. Mrs A. H. Broad, 5 down; Mrs S. R. Lowden, 5 down; Mrs R. C. Cook, 5 down; Mrs H. M. Smith, 6 down; Mrs O. G. Gilmour, 6 down. TUATAPERE CLUB The women’s A grade golf championship at Tuatapere was won by Miss W. Hannan, with Mrs Peter Scott runnerup. The fixture was played over 36 holes for Mr Robert Scott’s trophy. Tlie best scores returned were:—Miss W. Hannan 94-100-194; Mrs Peter Scott 98-98-196; Mrs D. McLeod 100-105-205. The women’s B grade championship was won by Mrs W. J. Henderson, the runner-up being Mrs R. Walker. The championship was played over 18 holes for Mrs Langmuir’s trophy. Tire runner-up won a prize donated by Mrs Peter Scott. The scores were:—Mrs Henderson 121; Mrs R. Walker 125. A mixed foursome will be played today for Mr and Mrs B. Brooke’s prizes.
