A Big Loss One of the Aga Khan’s big breeding and racing establishments in France was situated in German-occupied territory, and must consequently be written off as a total loss. But he is not alone in his misfortune. Mr Joseph E. Widener, a well-known American racehorse owner, had bloodstock to the value of £62,500 stabled in Normandy, and is completely without news of them. No news either is obtainable concerning the French horse Djebel, or, more serious still, of his owner. M. Boussac.

El Golea’s Record Aurie’s Star “smashed the clock” when he won the Whittier Handicap,'six furlongs, in Imin Sgsec, establishing a new record for Australia and New Zealand. The previous best was that of Silver Scorn, who recorded Imin 9 2-ssec at Riccarton in February 1933, when carrying 9.11, and Regular Bachelor, Imin 91sec, at Flemington in March 1938. The world’s record, Imin 6 l-ssec, was established by Broken Tendril at Brighton, England, in 1929. Aurie’s Star put up an amazing performance for, though he was assisted by the wind, he carried 10.2, and carried it as if it was a feather. Racegoers gasped when the time was posted, and many declared that the clock had “gone mad,” but it was correct. The time is not only electrically recorded, but is checked by a hand watch. Aurie’s Star was unruly at the barrier, and, though he jumped away well, he did not gather speed as smartly as usual, and it was not till about half-way through the race that he secured the lead, and after that the issue was never in doubt.

“Scraps Of Paper” Commenting on the seizure of French thoroughbreds by the Germans, the well-known English writer “Rapier” says: “I do not believe that any real profit will accrue to the enemy. Nobody will take the slightest interest in German bloodstock after the war, because nobody will give the slightest credence to pedigrees of any horses which have been in German or German occupied territory. As far as racing and breeding are concerned, Germany is beyond the pale, and I see no option for the trustees of the Stud Book but to exclude rigidly all stock which cannot be proved to have been out of reach of the enemy.” German pedigrees will be scraps of paper.
