SHIKARI WELL FORWARD
Don’t Forget Will Be In Favour THE CARDINAL HAS DONE WELL Nominations for the Dunedin meeting close on September 24. Guilder Amiss Guilder, who has been entered for the New Zealand Cup, has gone amiss. Working Well Pleading has been responsible for some excellent track work at Riccarton during the week. Stud Item Full Fling, the dam of Wild Career and Secret Flight, is to be mated with Pink Coat. Unlucky After losing ground at the start Mendel ran a great race to finish fourth in the mile saddle at New Brighton. Peerless The entry of Peerless for the New Zealand Cup suggests that the mare may return from Sydney earlier than was expected. New Zealand Trotting Cup The New Zealand Trotting Cup this year will be a 4.26 limit, but horses as loose at 4.28 will be eligible. The stake will be worth £2500. From Fairform A four-year-old mare, by Pink Coat from Fairform, the dam of Passaform, Tauramai and others, has been added to A. S. Ellis’s Riccarton team. Not Engaged The Wellington Centennial Cup winner, Old Bill, is looking a picture at present. His omission from the New Zealand Cup entries is a surprise, for his earlier-planned Melbourne trip is definitely off. Ferry Post
Ferry Post’s New Brighton win will probably bring him back to a 4.28 twomile mark and he will thus be eligible for the New Zealand Trotting Cup.
Dinah Dhu Dinah Dhu has never raced with much luck, but she has some useful placings to her credit and she will not be overlooked in the Chatmos Handicap today. Out Of Action
Wagner broke down during the week and it has proved to be serious; it. is doubtful whether he will race again. Wagner has never been a very sound horse, but he has been a useful performer for Mr D. O. Rutherford.
Bright Prospects Shikari’s recent work has been most impressive and he promises to strip well at Ashburton today. His three-year-old career is full of great possibilities.
Iceland Spar Iceland Spar is a good staying hack and if he races up to his form at the National meeting he will be hard to beat in the Penscroft Handicap today.
Not Coming Because of risks in transport the Australian pacer, Van Derby, who has a mile record of 2min 0 2-ssec and a mile and a-half record of 3min 9 3-ssec, will not be brought to New Zealand this season as had been planned earlier. Little Form
Very few of those in the Spring Handicap at Ashburton have any recent form in their favour. Rebellion may be the favourite but Night Dress is one who is capable of upsetting calculations. At Avondale
The Cardinal, Our Jean, Gamos and Mintlaw are the favourites for the Avondale Cup today. In the Flying Handicap Graymiss, Lou Rosa, Landuff and Queen City are in favour. Recovered
Royal Lancer has evidently recovered from the eye injury he received before the National meeting and some interest will be shown in his form at Ashburton. Has Done Well
Density has grown into a big mare and is in solid condition to undertake spring racing. Her first appearance for the season will be at the South Canterbury meeting next month, and she will no doubt be sent to Trentham. Wild Coon
Wild Coon raced well enough at the National meeting to suggest that he would soon break his maiden status. The Nigger Minstrel three-year-old has been working in good style and he promises to show up at the Ashburton County meeting today.
An Inquiry After the running of the Seaview Handicap at New Brighton on Thursday, the stewards were not satisfied with the driving of Willowbank by D. C. Watts. After an inquiry it was decided that there was insufficient evidence to warrant further action. Should Be Favourite
Don’t Forget won twice over six furlongs at Riccarton last month but failed over seven on the concluding day under 9.0. He is not up against such strong company in the Chatmos Handicap at Ashburton today, and with 8.7 over six furlongs is likely to be made favourite. Blonde Princess
Blonde Princess, a relative to Hunting Cry, Sporting Blood and Sly Fox, has done all her racing in sprints, but she has been nominated for the New Zealand Cup. In view of this entry it is interesting to note that she is an acceptor for the Avondale Cup, in which she is handicapped as a non-stayer on 7.3, as well as in the Flying Handicap with 8.2. Last season she won open sprints at Wanganui, Trentham and Ellerslie, and is nicely placed at Avondale in each race. The Cardinal
Last year’s Avondale Cup victor, The Cardinal, has never looked brighter at any stage of his career, while his track work has been most satisfactory. Having his first race of the season, the Night Raid gelding indicated that he was close to his best by going a surprisingly good race to finish fifth in the sprint at the recent Pakuranga Hunt meeting at Ellerslie. The Cardinal is one of the best stayers in the province and the New Zealand Cup will see him a contender if he races up to
