WORK AT HOMER TUNNEL
SATISFACTORY RATE OF PROGRESS The work of widening the Homer Tunnel and forming the road to Milford is continuing steadily and a satisfactory rate of progress is being maintained. Mr P. Keller, district engineer of the Public Works Department at Dunedin, who has been visiting Invercargill, said yesterday that long drills were in short supply and unless orders came to hand fairly soon it might be found necessary to reduce the number of shifts. At present three shifts were being worked on six days of the week. If the shifts were reduced the progress would naturally be slower. About 80 men are at present employed on the road-forming work from the end of the tunnel to Milford. These men are also engaged in building bridges. When the work is completed there will be more than 80 bridges and large culverts on the new road to Milford.
