PROTEST AGAINST PAYMENT SYSTEM
“THIS IS ABOUT THE LAST STRAW”
(Special to The Times) AUCKLAND, September 11. “No more striking example of the unstable position of the motor industry caused entirely by petrol rationing can be given than the action taken by oil companies in New Zealand in introducing cash-on-delivery terms for petrol,” said Mr W. A. Nehoff last night at a meeting of protest against petrol rationing, organized by the Auckland Allied Motor Traders' Association.
It was announced at the meeting that the oil companies’ new system became effective yesterday, when petrol resellers and garage proprietors received printed instructions that in future they would be required to pay tank drivers when petrol was delivered. The previous limit of credit was 15 days. “We feel this is about the last straw, and it can only be interpreted as kicking a -man when he is down,” Mr Nehoff added.
Mr W. T. Anderton, M.P., who was one of five members of Parliament present jon invitation, said it could not be suggested that the Government was responsible for the oil companies’ measure, which appeared to be unjust and unnecessary.
