MONEY FOR FIVE MORE PLANES
GIFT OF AUCKLAND NEWSPAPER READERS
(United Press Association) • AUCKLAND, September 11. The total amount of subscriptions to The New Zealand Herald readers’ aeroplane fund—£33,B72—has been remitted to the secretary of the treasury and the Prime Minister (the Hon. P. Fraser) has been asked to send the money to Lord Beaverbrook, Minister of Aircraft Production in Great Britain.
The following cablegram was sent to Lord Beaverbrook:—
“New Zealand Herald readers, within three weeks, have subscribed over £33,000 which we have requested the Prime Minister to remit to you for the purchase of aeroplanes. This gift is offered as a grateful tribute to the Royal Air Force.” The letter, signed by Sir Henry Horton, managing director of Wilson and Horton Limited, to the Prime Minister, says:— . “We believe the amount of The New Zealand Herald readers’ fund will pay for five fighter aeroplanes. Will you please suggest to Lord Beaverbrook that the aeroplanes be named Auckland 1, Auckland 2, Auckland 3, Auckland 4 and Auckland 5.”
