MISSING SOUTHLAND AIRMAN

FLYING OFFICER VICKERY WAS ON THE GLORIOUS

Flying Officer Harold E. Vickery, who was reported missing on June 20 “as a result of enemy action at sea,” was on the aircraft carrier Glorious when she was attacked by German warships in northern Norwegian waters. Flying Officer Vickery is a son of Mr and Mrs P. H. Vickery, formerly of Invercargill. Mrs Vickery is now in England. > The loss of the Glorious, the troop ship Orama, two destroyers and an oil tanker during the withdrawal of British troops from Norway was announced by the Admiralty on June 10. Flying Officer Pat Jameson, of Lower Hutt, who was among the survivors from the Glorious, has stated that he was standing on the deck of the aircraft carrier with Flying Officer Vickery and another pilot while she was being heavily shelled by the German forces. Flying Officer Jameson went below for a few minutes to get a lifebelt, and when he returned to the deck Flying Officer Vickery was missing.

A German communique quoted by the Admiralty on June 10 stated that there were several hundred survivors from the British shjps.

AIRCRAFTSMAN KILLED AT OHAKEA (United Press Association) WELLINGTON, September 11. It was announced officially in Wellington tonight that Aircraftsman Arthur Lawrence Jessop, aged 22, was killed when he was struck by the propeller of a plane at the Ohakea Air Force station at 6.4 p.m. today. His father is Mr A. L. Jessop, of P.ongotea. DEATH OF MEMBER OF SECOND ECHELON (United Pres- Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, September 11.

Advice has been received at New Plymouth of the death on active service in England of Sapper Oswald J. Jans, a member of the Forestry detachment of the 2nd Echelon of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. . Sapper Jans, who was 47, was unmarried. He was the second son of the late Mr and Mrs O. Jans, formerly well-known residents of the Stafford and Oakura districts. Sapper Jans also lived for some time at Oakura and Okato, but for the past 10 years had lived in the King Country, where he was engaged in contracting. He saw three years’ service in the last war. He enlisted from. Taumarunui.
