SOUTHLAND ASSOCIATION The Civil Service Club was declared the winner of the Doublebee Cup at the final meeting for the season of the Southland Men’s Hockey Association. The president, Mr J. D. Gregg, congratulated Mr H. Rennick, of the Civil Service Club, on the excellent performance of the team during the season and also on winning the cup. He also congratulated the team on its win against Albany (Dunedin) on Saturday. The Southland Boys’ High School team was declared the winner of the intermediate grade and the High School A team won the junior grade. Messrs J. S. Brass, F. Hinton and H. Perrin were appointed to arrange the presentation of the Lewis Shield to the High School team. The entries for the six-a-side tournament on Septembei’ 14 close with the secretary today. It has been decided that two points will be awarded for a win, and one for a draw. The games will be started at the ringing of a bell and the games will stop at the sound of the bell at both half-time and full time. In the event of accidents or a penalty bully, however, time will be allowed. The tournament is to begin at 1 p.m. sharp and the captain of each team is requested to report to, and keep in touch with, the supervisor. It was suggested that the association participate in the gala day at Rugby Park on September 28 and it was decided that the association preferred to give a display of hockey in the various grades on the occasion. RETURN MATCH DESIRED As the Otago Men’s Hockey Association was desirous of a return game at Dunedin, on September 21, it was decided to ask a town representative team to travel to Dunedin for the return game. Mr Gregg was appointed manager and one of the umpires for the match.
Mr Hinton, speaking on behalf of the association, praised the work of Mr H. E. Perrin, the president of the Umpire’s Association. He thanked him for the way he had re-organized the association and for the capable way in which the umpires had turned out each Saturday for the club and representative games. Mr Perrin replied. Special mention of the capabilities of the president, Mr Gregg, was made by /Mr Perrin. He congratulated Mr Gregg on the efficient way in which the business was carried out and said that Southland hockey players were fortunate in having such a capable president. Mr F. Hinton endorsed Mr Perrin’s remarks.
In reply, Mr Gregg thanked the speakers for their remarks and stated that he was pleased to see that hockey was going ahead. He praised the work of the secretary, Mr J. Chisnail, and his remarks were endorsed by Messrs Hinton and Perrin.
