CHEQUE FOR SECOND 1 AEROPLANE A cheque for £10,500 to pay for the second fighter aeroplane the people of Southland are giving to the Royal Air Force was posted yesterday to the Prime Minister, the Rt. Sturman) at the request of the secretary of the Southland Fighter Aeroplane Fund Committee (Mr R. R. Binney), who wrote:
“As the Southland Fighter Aeroplane Fund has now reached a total of £21,000 my committee should be obliged if you would forward to the Prime Minister a cheque for £10,500; the money is to be transmitted to England for the purchase of a second fighter plane for presentation to the British Government by the residents of Southland.
“The presentation is made in recognition of tlie magnificent work of the Royal Air Force. It is the wish of the donors that, if possible, the plane be named Southland II and flown by a New Zealand airman.” The letter contained the thanks of the committee to the City Council office staff which had assisted so willingly in the handling of the fund.
