NO MYSTERY SHIP
A report from The Sun (Sydney), reprinted in The Southland Times yesterday, stated that “a mystery vessel, fairly bristling with guns, was sighted off the New Zealand coast by an American liner.” It has since been ascertained that the steamer was nothing more than a defensively equipped British merchant ship carrying one gun. The originators of the greatly exaggerated story were passengers on the Mariposa.
