SMOKING IN HALL

To The Editor Sir, —It is something scandalous that young men should smoke in a hall, where pictures are shown. Women complain of it as it stings the eyes. Looking from the operating room one can see a streak of smoke to the screen. I go to pictures in Otautau, in Gore, Wyr.dham, and in other small townships, but there is no smoking. But every night in Drummond the smokers are there. Some think it is a bacon curing factory, or else they go for the pleasure of Smoking, not to see and enjoy the pictures. A constable or some one is needed to check the practice. The proprietor has put a warning on the screen, but no heed has been taken of it; the nuisance still goes on. If the proprietor were to stop screening pictures until the hall was clear of smoke, then they might stop smoking till the screening was over.—Yours, etc., NON SMOKER. September 9, 1940.
